Backpack to the Future – 2018 School Supply Drive
Jul 31 all-day
United Way

While having school supplies may simply be an item on the ‘to-do’ list for many parents and guardians, for others, the calculator that their child needs, or a backpack without last year’s broken zippers, may not be in the cards. 2018 SSD logoThese parents—and especially their children—should not have to worry about heading into school without the necessary supplies. This is why the United Way has this drive and, by contributing the supplies our students need to succeed, we’re investing in the future of our community. Together we are stronger. United, we make a difference. #BackpacktotheFuture.

This year’s 2018 school supply drive will be July 9th trough July 27th.  If you visit www.handsonasheville.org/schoolsupplydrive, you will see that there are links for that online shopping avenue, a downloadable supply list for going to the store yourself, a downloadable “toolkit” should you decide to hold your own drive, and if you would simply like to donate, in general, to the School Supply Drive’s efforts, there is an option for that as well. Any and all options and the donations we receive help us invest in our future!

Hops for Hunger: Beer City Comes Together in July to Help Feed WNC
Jul 31 all-day

Throughout the month of July, you can enjoy a great local craft beverage and help support MANNA’s mission to provide food to families across WNC.

Many of us are busy planning summer vacations, gatherings, and picnics ahead of July. But for over 100,000 Western North Carolina residents busy trying to make ends meet to provide for their most basic needs, that kind of celebration is out of the question.

That is why the nationally recognized WNC beer scene is collaborating again, and raising the stakes, to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in Western North Carolina. Over twenty local breweries are joining forces to help support MANNA FoodBank’s mission to end hunger for thousands of families across WNC through the 2nd annual Hops for Hunger campaign, July 1st – 31st.

Hops for Hunger is made possible through support from Asheville Ale Trail, and MANNA’s annual sponsors: Preserve Communities, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, Anurja Interactive, The Cantina at Historic Biltmore Village, Mast General Store, and Lamar Advertising.

TOUR DE FAT

New Belgium Brewing

New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat Brings the Party Back
Humankind’s greatest invention – the bike – takes center stage once again

(FORT COLLINS) New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat, a traveling beer, music and bicycle festival, will turn the party out in six cities this year, offering a one-of-a-kind way to raise money for local non-profits, celebrate self-propelled two-wheel travel and dress up as your alter ego while enjoying world-class beers and action-packed entertainment. It all kicks off on June 30 in Chicago, IL, and wraps up in Tempe, AZ, on October 6.

“Our love for bikes runs deep at New Belgium, all the way back to our founding, “explained Tour de Fat Brand Manager, Sam Sawyer. “Tour de Fat is our Bike Love manifested in a way that uniquely blends fundraising, beer, bikes and bemusement. We’re anxious to get this spectacle back on the road this summer and we hope everyone joins us in giving back to local communities.”

Now in its 19th year, New Belgium’s Tour de Fat has raised more than $5 million for partnering non-profits since its inception. Tickets will cost $15 (children 12 & under are free) and will be available in advance online at www.newbelgium.com/tdf or at any of the box offices for Tour de Fat venues (pending availability).

Most tour stops will feature the wildly popular costumed bicycle parade, headlining musical acts and other revelry, including a touring ensemble of comedians, cirque performers, and general mayhemists. The touring ensemble cast includes Handsome Little Devils, Sedan Halen, Daredevil Chicken, and KOLARS. All world-class performers, Daredevil Chicken are celebrating a particularly big year after delivering a winning performance on ABC’s “The Gong Show.”

“The goal for this year’s tour is to provide a low-cost, family-friendly event that’s jam packed with quality entertainment and amazing beers,” said Sawyer. “Tour de Fat is ever-evolving, and New Belgium’s employee owners are proud of the Tour de Fat’s carnival of creativity that gives back to communities.”

32nd ANNUAL MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS FOLK FESTIVAL
Sep 23 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Burnsville Town Center

The Annual Music in the Mountains Folk Music Festival is coming to the Burnsville Town Center on Saturday, September 23 from 5:30 to 8:30pm. The Annual Festival, sponsored by the Toe River Arts Council and now in its 32nd year, includes bluegrass and traditional music, ballad singers, and dancing. Instruments range from fiddle to dulcimer to guitar. And this year, the Festival is recognizing Bruce Greene for his contribution to the preservation of traditional music.

The Burnsville Town Center, only a short, half-block walk from the Town Square, fills with friends, family, and folks interested in participating in an evening of melody and song.

Internationally known Appalachian dulcimer player and the night’s emcee, Don Pedi, will introduce traditional balladeer and storyteller, Bobby McMillon, and musician and dancer Carol Rifkin with Jeannette Queen and Mark Queen. Also, during the evening, another family favorite, Jonah Riddle and the Carolina Express, will take to the stage with bluegrass and gospel that will get the spirits soaring.

Bruce Greene will be recognized by Will Ritter. And with a few friends—Loy McWhirter, Rob Levin, and Don Pedi—will perform several mountain favorites which are being preserved by the wealth of regional musicians, singers, storytellers, and dancers.

Music In The Mountains Folk Festival is a tribute to our region’s diverse musical heritage. Our evening celebration of traditional performers is uncommon in diversity and artistic excellence.  Let’s bring in the Fall together! Come join us in September!

Cleveland Park

Welcome to the 11th Annual Upstate Run & Roll 5K – a 5K and 1 Mile Walk/Roll at Cleveland Park in beautiful downtown Greenville, SC!!!

The Brain Injury Association of South Carolina (BIASC) is dedicated to creating a better future through brain injury prevention, research, education and advocacy. We are the only nonprofit organization in the state dedicated to preventing and helping those with brain injury. The Upstate Run & Roll 5K and 1 Mile Walk / Roll began as a support for brain injury survivors and a tool for awareness. It was initially about the patients and giving them the opportunity to participate in something with meaning. This event has increased from 45 participants to 400+ participants with participants who are both brain injury survivors and teams that run/walk/roll in honor or memory of someone. The Run For Thought has become a community event that includes brain injury survivors, caregivers, providers, as well as competitive runners.

We welcome you to the 11th Annual Upstate Run & Roll 5K and 1 Mile Walk / Roll…

Please note – This event is run mostly on the Swamp Rabbit Trail throughout Cleveland Park in downtown Greenville. 100% of the run is on pavement.
