The City of Spartanburg Parks and Recreation department is taking geocaching to an exciting new level. Launching on May 3rd, 2014 is the Hub City Geotrail. This Geotrail will take you around the City of Spartanburg on a high tech adventure and scavenger hunt. Get your GPS ready for the kick off at this year’s Spring Fling. There will be a limited edition, trackable geocoin for participants that complete the trail passport.

To redeem your Geocoin you can hand deliver your completed passport to our Park, Recreation and Special Events office located at 100 North Liberty Street in Spratnaburg. (Our office is above the Sparta Passenger Center) PLease keep in mind that our office is open Monday – Friday and closed on holidays.

You can also mail your complete passport to:

The Vic Bailey Subaru Bike Park is a community collaboration located off the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail behind the Flock Shop in Spartanburg, SC. The park includes bicycle features like the wood and dirt flow trails which take mountain bikers on a roller coaster experience with little pedaling and braking necessary. The park was made to suit all skill levels, built with progressive features so you can start small and advance at your own pace.

The North Carolina Arboretum is going wild for art and nature in 2021 with Wild Art! On view April 1 through September 26, this outdoor sculpture exhibition features works by 17 local and national artists drawing inspiration from the natural environment. Situated throughout the Arboretum’s spacious, open-air gardens, the show offers guests a doorway into the wild world from the comfort and safety of cultivated landscapes transformed by art.

The 18 sculptures on display represent a variety of approaches to the theme of “wild art,” from the literal to the abstract, and are crafted from a diverse array of materials that will delight and inspire. Let your imagination take you on a wild journey into the world of plants and animals near and far with Wild Art at The North Carolina Arboretum.

The exhibit is available to all guests during normal Arboretum hours, and there is no admission cost to view the sculptures beyond our usual parking fee of $16 per personal vehicle.

Naturalist Niche: Early Bird Walk

Chimney Rock State Park

Start Flock to the Rock out with a bevy of birds!  This early bird walk was designed to start before the Park opens to ensure participants get the best chance to encounter a variety of birds. Taking place during fall migration also enhances the number of species expected to be in our area. This hike is considered moderate and is the prelude to our 13th Annual Flock to the Rock event which starts at 11am. Click here to see what birds you might see during your hike. Space is limited and advance registration is required for this hike.

Waggin’ at the Waterpark – Otter Creek

This time, the waterparks have gone to the dogs! Bring your four-legged friend out for a fun-filled day of swimming.  Come out to Discovery Island on September 11th, head to Otter Creek on September 18th or register for both and save.

Event will be held rain or shine. Dog must be 3 months old and completed first round of vaccines.

Large Dogs (over 25 lbs) 9:00 – 10:30 am & 10:45 am – 12:15 pm
Small Dogs (25 lbs & under) & Seniors 12:30 – 2:00 pm

Pre-Registration:
$23 one event (out of county fee is $29)
$38 for both events (out of county fee is $48)
Day-of Registration:
$28 one event (out of county fee is $35)
Admission prices are for one dog and one handler. Each additional person is $4 ($5 for out of county participants)
