WEST END WALKING TOUR
Mar 21 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Greenville—Falls Park

This tour begins at the very birthplace of Greenville—Falls Park. The same allure of the gorgeous 40-foot natural waterfall that casts a spell on Falls Park visitors today must have had the same impact on the first colonial settler, Richard Pearis, when he arrived in c.1769. Less than a handful of American cities can boast such a waterfall in the heart of downtown. Visitors receive a chronological history of our city beginning with a view of the falls from the newest icon of the city’s cityscape—the award-winning pedestrian Liberty Bridge. At the foundation walls of an 1816 grist mill built by Vardry McBee, guests will learn about the factors that caused this small trading post town to grow into the textile center of the world.

Other highlights of the tour include discussion of some of the oldest buildings still existing along the banks of the river, including the 1882 Huguenot Mill and the Gower, Cox and Markley Carriage factory buildings that are now used for dining and entertainment. On the other side of the river banks, visitors will soak in the magnificent features of the $137 million Riverplace development with its unique mix of restaurants, offices, condominiums, artists’ open studios, a 30-foot cascading waterfall feature, hotel and more.

A stroll back up Main St. into the West End discusses a famous Greenvillian, Charles Townes. This tour will give you a great overview of our city’s past but you’ll also hear about the exciting current projects that are adding to the downtown experience as well as future projects that are going to be transforming us into the future.

Highlights include:

• Ruins of an 1816 grist mill built by the “Father of Greenville”, Vardry McBee

• The 1882 Huguenot Mill – learn how Greenville became the “Textile Center of the World”
• The 1857 Gower, Cox and Markley Carriage factory building, once the largest carriage company in the South
• Riverplace – stroll the river walk while learning about the beautiful complex of fine restaurants, shopping, condos, open artist studios, and more overlooking the Reedy River that has sparked a revitalization of the Historic West End
• The bronze memorial to Charles Townes, a Greenvillian who became the inventor of the laser.

Spartanburg businesses 31 days of awareness to support Developmental Disabilities Month+ the Charles Lea Center
Mar 22 all-day
Various Spartanburg Businesses

For the second year in a row, local Spartanburg businesses will participate in 31 days of awareness to support Developmental Disabilities Month in support of the Charles Lea Center Foundation. In 1987, the year that the March National Disabilities Awareness Month proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives, the Charles Lea Center Foundation was established to support the Center and its mission to improve the quality of life for those with disabilities and special needs

Last year the business community rallied to help raise nearly $30,000 to support the Foundation, and 60 plus local businesses are planning a range of community offerings with proceeds benefiting the Foundation this March.

“We are overwhelmed by the response of our ‘Community Champions’, over 60 local merchants who are participating this month by either choosing a day(s), week or the entire month to host what we are calling a “give back” day(s) to the CLC Foundation,” said Marisa Cecil – CLC Foundation President. “Some folks may not know that on average it costs $70 a day or $14,500 a year to support each community member the Charles Lea Center supports.”

Serving the greater Spartanburg area for over 45 years, The Charles Lea Center supports 1,500 community members with disabilities and special needs in Spartanburg County each year by providing a range of services to over 75 locations in the County.

The FR8yard will be back supporting CLCF during their St. Patty’s Day Celebration on March 19th with 10% of proceeds from the day benefiting the Foundation.

Community members are encouraged to patronize the stores, companies, and organizations like ‘Two Doors Down’, a retail store on Main Street, participating in the March awareness month who are making “Dreams Possible” for the individuals with special needs and disabilities right here in Spartanburg County. See the full calendar of participating businesses and daily activations here: https://www.charleslea.org/online-registration/

SPEAKERS

Gail Sharps Myers, EVP, Chief Legal Officer & Chief People Officer at Denny’s
Molly Cashman, Owner of Blue Moon Specialty Foods & Yep! Shake
Molly is a co-owner of Blue Moon Specialty Foods where she partners with her Dad. While he was growing the business at farmers markets and local events, Molly was cutting her teeth in the corporate marketing world. She spent a decade working for top notch companies, including Amazon.com, Wyche Law Firm and Pure Barre – learning everything she could about marketing, business development, finance, customer service and more. After years of being her Dad’s cheerleader from the sidelines, Molly decided it was time to leave the corporate world and take the leap into the entrepreneurship with her Dad. They opened a gourmet food market and restaurant in Spartanburg called Blue Moon Specialty Foods featuring Yep! Shake along with many of her Dad’s other famous recipes. They are currently working on their second location which will house another commercial kitchen and a new retail concept they are calling the Blue Moon Bodega.
Molly is the proud wife to her better half, Jeff Cashman, and a busy mom of three kids, two springer spaniels, a cat and some fish.

Thanks FLO: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted
Mar 22 @ 8:00 am – 9:00 pm
The North Carolina Arboretum

Who was the visionary who designed some of America’s most iconic gardens and parks? Find out at an all-new  exhibit celebrating the life and work of Frederick Law Olmsted (FLO).

The exhibit on the man who planned both Central Park (his first major design) and Biltmore in Asheville (his final one), takes center stage in the Baker Visitor Center Exhibit Hall and at select locations in the landscape on the occasion of his 200th birthday. Thanks FLO features a retrospective of Olmsted’s life through landmarks and key moments and shows off a selection of his most iconic designs through vintage postcards, maps and green screen technology.

Step into the designing game and build a park using interactive tools and take a selfie that puts you front and center in iconic Olmsted parks. Outdoor exhibits await discovery and  illustrate the design principles Olmsted used while designing and building parks, greenways, campuses and private estates across the United States.

The exhibit is created in conjunction with the National Association for Olmsted Parks (NAOP) in celebration of Olmsted’s 200th birthday on April 26, 2022.

Thanks FLO:  Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted is presented in participation with Olmsted 200, a nationwide celebration taking place in parks and public spaces across the United States.
