Our compassion lies in forgoing our own comfort out of concern for our friends, family and neighbors. Together, we will sacrifice convenience for the safety of all South Carolinians. Each of us can help slow the spread of COVID-19. #SlowtheSpreadSC

A Voice of Her Own: South Carolina Women in Politics – Colonial Women—Women’s Suffrage Month
Aug 3 all-day
Online

Next week marks the beginning of Women’s Suffrage Month, a month in which we celebrate August 26th as the remarkable anniversary of the long struggle to gain a woman’s right to cast a ballot. Note: That right was initially given only to White women with Black women officially winning the right to vote with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The SC State Museum is commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment with its exhibit A Voice of Her Own: South Carolina Women in Politics. The exhibit features objects, images and stories showing the ways South Carolina women engaged with the political history of our state. From tribal women leaders, to the first female Governor of the state, this exhibit shows how women worked to gain a voice of their own.

Because of the pandemic, the Museum’s traffic is limited (see special rules), so South Carolina Women in Leadership has proudly partnered with the South Carolina State Museum in sharing that story and the struggles of women throughout our state’s history who wanted their opinions to count and for their voices to be heard. Join us for nine episodes traveling through South Carolina’s rich history, escorted by exhibit curator Joann Zeise. For those of us staying close to home during a time of coronavirus, this lets all of us enjoy a small sampling of the exhibit.

Dogwood Alliance: Woods + Wilds: The Podcast!

For the safety and well-being of our supporters, Dogwood Alliance will not hold our annual Woods & Wilds live storytelling event this year. It’s an event we look forward to every year because it’s an opportunity to celebrate the magic of forests with our community. We still wanted to find a way to bring that same kind of magic to people wherever they are, so we teamed up with SlayTheMic to launch Woods & Wilds: The Podcast! We will be releasing an episode every other Monday.

The podcast will sometimes offer tales of the forest and other times will be an interview with our guests about their unique connection to nature – often touching on the connection between hip hop and nature.

We were overjoyed to welcome our very first guest, Dr. Thomas RaShad Easley aka RaShad Eas, also known as the Hip Hop Forester and the Assistant Dean of Community and Inclusion at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, where he helps strengthen community diversity and develops programming around workplace equity. He’s also the author of the incredible article How Hip Hop Can Bring Green Issues To Communities of Color.

Don’t Waste Durham: Reduce Waste Survey

Customer Survey about Takeout “Extras”
This survey is 17 questions long and should take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Responses will be recorded anonymously unless contact information is provided following completion.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? Don’t Waste Durham thanks you VERY much for taking this survey. Your responses are important to understanding whether and how much people are using the takeout “extras” (plastic forks, paper napkins, etc) that restaurants give you with your takeout/delivery. THANK YOU!

Online Database: Meet your 2020 Candidates for county, state, and federal office
Aug 3 all-day
Online
To spread the news, we’ve created a comprehensive database of women who filed for office before March 31 on our website and are adding links to campaign information for all female candidates as they become available. Please note: our database only includes current candidates for county, state, or federal office as opposed to municipal offices (town, city, etc.) as many municipalities are still accepting candidate filings for their elections. Most of these filing periods expire in mid- to late August. At that time, we will be sure to disseminate municipal candidate information to our members.

There’s always an election on the horizon in South Carolina. In 2020, South Carolina will vote on one United States Senator, all seven United States House Representatives, all members in both chambers of the South Carolina State House, and many school board and County offices.

Currently, South Carolina is ranked 45th among 50 states with respect to the number of women in elected office, with no women in the US Senate or US House.  It’s time for women to come forward in great numbers to reach a critical mass of representation – in media, in corporations, and in government.

Fill The Bridge’s Pantry

Right now, The Bridge always appreciates food donations in order to keep helping our neighbors.

Pantry Needs: The Bridge has requested donations for items that can be made into meals such as pasta and pasta sauce, mac and cheese, Hamburger Helper, canned meat, and Chunky soup.

Donations can be dropped off at The Bridge Monday-Thursday from 8AM to 6PM at the Main Entrance!
