Sigal Music Museum is proud to present Sounds of America from July 8, 2022, to March 31, 2023. This exhibit endeavors to tell the story of music in America by examining its artists, recordings, and technologies from 1775 to the present day. Sounds of America features a variety of genres and includes some exciting local examples.

Sounds of America reveals stories from the founding of the United States to the modern day, displaying a cross-section of genres, artists, and developing technologies for listening to and recording music. Visitors will explore the development of music in America not just from the performer’s perspective but also from the consumer’s experience. One of the best ways to understand a historical era is to listen to its music. Sounds of America allows you to absorb the sights and sounds of the early eras of this country and experience history through the lens of music.
Explore music history from the very first piano ever made and sold in America, through the jazz age, all the way to the first generation Apple iPod Touch!

The Greenville-centric story opens on Halloween night. While most families make their rounds through the well-known neighborhoods, a handful of kids break off from the group. Hoping to reveal an unspoken Greenville secret, they head to an abandoned mansion along the Reedy River. They knock on the door, and after no answer, a brave little girl says “Let’s go!” and pushes it open. Lightning flashes to reveal a silhouette of a couple who dance a pas de deux to a string quartet medley of several Michael Jackson-inspired tunes.

The Chorale’s 61^st season begins with SONG – “how sweet the music…”

Shakespeare’s words and the beautiful musical setting by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The songs of the 13^th century Benediktbeuern monks (“Carmina Burana”), explore

in the exciting music by Carl Orff (1895-1982) love songs, drinking songs, complaints

about fortune (luck), and parodies of more sacred texts.   The well-known opening

chords (often heard at fall football games!) set the stage for a rousing evening

of beautiful, evocative, at times intense, sometimes humorous, and always smile-producing

music.

7:00 PM – Paul Hyde will share his thoughts on this evening of diverse musical styles

and expressions of diverse emotions – both serious and not-so-serious.

The Carolina Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform a side-by-side concert with members of the Greenville Symphony. The concert is conducted by Dr. Leslie W. Hicken and will feature Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, Berlioz’ March to the Scaffold from Symphonie fantastique, Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre and Schindler’s List by John Williams. Joining them on Schindler’s List are two CYS alumna: Dianna Joiner (violin soloist) and Claire Stam (harpist).

The Concert Orchestra conducted by Mr. James F. Kilgus and the Repertory Orchestra conducted by Mrs. Ginger R. Greer will also be featured on the concert performing selections by Barnes, Brahms, Elfman, Gustafson, Ippolitov-Ivanov and Strauss
