Now is the time to seize the day! Based off the smash hit Broadway musical, Disney’s Newsies Jr. is a rousing tale inspired by the true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City. When publishers raise prices at the newsboys’ expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what’s right. Featuring a Tony-award winning score, and jaw dropping dance sequences, Disney’s Newsies Jr. will be a stunning SYT event you won’t soon forget!

The Sum of Trifles: Family Heirlooms and the Stories They Tell with Author Julia Ridley Smith
Feb 10 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Hub City Bookshop

When Julia Ridley Smith’s parents died, they left behind a virtual museum
of furniture, books, art, and artifacts. Between the contents of their
home, the stock from their North Carolina antiques shop, and the ephemera
of two lives lived, Smith faced a monumental task. What would she do with
her parents’ possessions?

Smith’s wise and moving memoir in essays, The Sum of Trifles, peels back
the layers of meaning surrounding specific objects her parents owned, from
an eighteenth-century miniature to her father’s prosthetics. A vintage
hi-fi provides a view of her often tense relationship with her father,
whose love of jazz kindled her own artistic impulse. A Japanese screen
embodies her mother’s principles of good taste and good manners, while an
antebellum quilt prompts Smith to grapple with her family’s slaveholding
legacy. Along the way, she turns to literature that illuminates how her
inheritance shaped her notions of identity and purpose.

The Sum of Trifles offers up dark humor and raw feeling, mixed with an
erudite streak. It’s a curious, thoughtful look at how we live in and with
our material culture and how we face our losses as we decide what to keep
and what to let go.

About the Author

Julia Ridley Smith is the author of a memoir, The Sum of Trifles
(University of Georgia Press, 2021), and a short story collection, Sex Romp
Gone Wrong (Blair, forthcoming, 2023). Her short stories and essays have
appeared in Alaska Quarterly Review, The Cincinnati Review, Ecotone,
Electric Literature, Literary Matters, the New England Review, Southern
Cultures, The Southern Review, and elsewhere. She teaches creative writing
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

KILL CORP
Feb 10 @ 8:00 pm
The Warehouse Theatre

At her fancy corporate job, Marie has noticed that when her female
co-workers announced they are pregnant, they are quickly replaced.
Being pregnant herself and trying to find a solution to this problem,
she suggests to her best work friend that maybe they just kill the
partners? Then she’d be in charge. It’s all a joke… but is it?
This world premiere comedy is from the writer of TO ALL THE BOYS
I’VE LOVED BEFORE.

WHO SHOULD SEE THIS SHOW:  From the hilariously dark mind of Sofia Alvarez, who wrote the Netflix adaptation of TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE and ALONG FOR THE RIDE comes this contemporary dark comedy.  We’re very lucky to be the first theater producing this show!  A millennial updating of 9 to 5, this show will have you gasping and laughing at the same time.  Have a problem with your boss?  Think you can do better if you were in charge?  Tired being told you can have it all?  Come see this world premiere that hilariously asks what lengths you’re willing to go to to call the shots.  If you loved THE THANKSGIVING PLAY or like your comedies dry and dark, this show is for you!

The Southern Studies Fellowship in Arts and Letters: Culture of the American South
Feb 11 all-day
online
South
The Southern Studies Fellowship in Arts and Letters is a first-of-its-kind and immersive fellowship focused on the culture of the American South. We’ve officially opened applications for year three of the program starting this summer!

This first-of-its-kind program brings one early-career artist and one early-career writer to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for a nine-month fellowship of research, creativity, teaching, and travel, culminating in a collaborative project informed by the region. This program is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the culture of the American South.

In addition to focusing on their own creative projects, the Southern Studies Fellows will have opportunities and requirements for educational community service in Spartanburg County; these will include college and high school classroom visits/lectures, readings, open studios, workshops, and projects affiliated with the host organizations. The fellows will be expected to contribute up to 20 hours per week in the following areas: community service, artist-writer collaboration, and out-of-town travel for project research.

A key component of this unique fellowship is the opportunity to interact with leading scholars, artists, and writers throughout the South. Each fellow will have opportunities to travel in the Southern region to conduct research at cultural and educational institutions, which will inform their work and will be critical in the development of their ideas for a collaborative project that expands the understanding of the modern South.
