Dinosaurs will roar into the Upstate South Carolina, when the Upcountry History Museum presents Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice. Crossing the threshold of this interactive exhibition means traveling back in time to explore the Age of the Dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice is the first child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding of dinosaurs and their habitats. Designed for young explorers, ages 3-10, the bilingual (Spanish and English) exhibit features three distinct sections that build on a child’s innate curiosity about dinosaurs: Land of Fire (a warm dinosaur habitat), Land of Ice (a cold dinosaur habitat), and a Field Research Station (complete with a Big Dig experience).
The steamy Land of Fire, present day Montana, introduces visitors to the Triceratops, T-Rex and the dinosaurs who called this environment home. Children can circle the land in insect costumes, buzz through a volcano with oozing lava, work through a swampy bog and identify an ecosystem of animals and plants.
No coats are needed for a trip across the Land of Ice where visitors meet the dinosaurs who made their homes in the cold climate of Alaska. Activities include: climbing rocky steps, breezing down an icy slide, and hopping across stepping stones in an icy river.
In the hands-on Field Research Station children and their caregivers don goggles and research vests, as they uncover dinosaur bones in a dig station and examine fossils to identify dinosaurs.
The exhibit builds on the popular fascination with dinosaurs and includes science, history, and literacy based activities to challenge all ages. Sculpted, touchable dinosaurs, featuring the most recent scientific findings about dinosaur colors, textures and structural form create opportunities for young
explorers to investigate clues that the dinosaurs left behind.

Darryl Moran’s images depict the frantic pace of race day as well as the camaraderie of the drivers, intimate moments with fans and family members, and the support and spirit of the pit crew. During his tenure, the self-taught artist captured such legendary drivers as Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Terry Labonte, Tammy Jo Kirk, and Harry Gant.
Moran’s pictures were some of the first to capture the emotion of the races and the compassion of the drivers and fans. His images, taken initially for his own interests, caught the eye of NASCAR executives, who felt that they signaled a new direction for the sport’s image, one that focused on a broader scope of experiences and not just the technicality of the race and its winners. Through photographs, memorabilia, and objects, the exhibition explores Moran’s development of this new vision of NASCAR, one that continues to shape the images of the sport today.
The exhibition also examines Moran’s role as a NASCAR photographer, including taking all the gear needed for the day – cameras, multiple lenses, water bottles, batteries, media cards, and more. NASCAR photographers move rapidly from the media center to the garage, to the track, and to the winner’s circle. After the first practice ends its back to the media center to process images, transmit them, and rest for a few minutes before heading to the garage or track to start all over. When there is a full-race the cycle repeats itself – when the race ends it’s a rush to the winner’s circle to get the best spot for a photo of the winner. And finally, it is back to the media center to transmit images to the various media outlets.
In its commitment to connecting Upstate local history with national and global history, the Upcountry History Museum will share the story of Greenville Pickens Speedway which started as a dirt track in 1940. After thirty years on dirt, the Speedway was paved in 1970. On April 10, 1971, Greenville Pickens Speedway hosted the first-ever, start to finish, live televised NASCAR Race. Since then, hundreds of sanctioned NASCAR races have taken place at the Speedway. Though the cars and drivers have changed, the legacy and thrill of racing continues.

With one foot in the real world and the other in a charmed dimension of his own making, Amos Lee creates the rare kind of music that’s emotionally raw yet touched with a certain magical quality. Since the release of his self-titled debut album in 2005, Lee has established himself as an acclaimed folk-rock artist known for powerful vocals, insightful lyrics and strong live shows. On his eighth album Dreamland, the Philadelphia-born singer/songwriter intimately documents his real-world struggles (alienation, anxiety, loneliness, despair), an outpouring born from deliberate and often painful self-examination.
Fueled by a desire to reach out more and in the spirit of fostering connection, Lee made Dreamland in close collaboration with L.A.-based producer Christian “Leggy” Langdon (Banks, Meg Myers). Thanks to this partnership, Dreamland embodies an unpredictable and endlessly imaginative sound – a prime showcase for Lee’s warmly commanding voice and soul-baring songwriting. With the release of Dreamland, Lee hopes that his songs might inspire others to live more fully and free of fear.
“Amos Lee’s musical heart has always poured a lot of soul into his songwriting and recording, as well as his emotionally powerful live performances.” – NPR
Join Chef Teryi on Tuesday, October 18th at 7:30 pm for a seated, taste-and-see event featuring Von Diaz’s cookbook Coconuts & Collards!
Brimming with humor and nostalgia, Coconuts & Collards is a recipe-packed memoir of growing up Latina in the Deep South. The stories center on the women in Diaz’s family who have used food to nourish and care for one another. We’ll spend the evening talking about the cookbook while savoring small plates and sipping on the wine pairing provided. Chef Teryi will even do some cooking demonstrations, giving tips and tricks along the way.
This is a ticketed event. Your ticket includes three small plates, a glass of wine, and a copy of the cookbook!
SUMMARY
When her family moved from Puerto Rico to Atlanta, Von Diaz traded plantains, roast pork, and malta for grits, fried chicken, and sweet tea. Brimming with humor and nostalgia, Coconuts and Collards is a recipe-packed memoir of growing up Latina in the Deep South. The stories center on the women in Diaz’s family who have used food to nourish and care for one another. When her mother–newly single and with two young daughters–took a second job to make ends meet, Diaz taught herself to cook, preparing meals for her sister after school, feeding her mother when she came home late from work. During summer visits to Puerto Rico, her grandmother guided her rediscovery of the island’s flavors and showed her traditional cooking techniques. Years later the island called her back to its warm and tropical embrace to be comforted by its familiar flavors. Inspired by her grandmother’s 1962 copy of Cocina Criolla–the Puerto Rican equivalent of the Joy of Cooking—Coconuts and Collards celebrates traditional recipes while fusing them with Diaz’s own family history and a contemporary Southern flair. Diaz discovers the connections between the food she grew up eating in Atlanta and the African and indigenous influences in so many Puerto Rican dishes. The funche recipe is grits kicked up with coconut milk. White beans make the catfish corn chowder creamy and give it a Spanish feel. The pinchos de pollo–chicken skewers–feature guava BBQ sauce, which doubles as the sauce for adobo-coated ribs. The pastelón is shepherd’s pie . . . with sweet plantains. And the quingombo recipe would be recognized as stewed okra in any Southern kitchen, even if it is laced with warm and aromatic sofrito Diaz innovates for modern palates, updating and lightening recipes and offering vegetarian alternatives. For the chayotes rellenos (stuffed squash), she suggests replacing the picadillo (sautéed ground beef) with seitan or tofu. She offers alternatives for difficult-to-find ingredients, like substi¬tuting potatoes for yucca and yautía–root vegetables typically paired with a meat to make sancocho. Diaz’s version of this hearty stew features chicken and lean pork. And because every good Puerto Rican meal ends with drinks, desserts, and dancing, Diaz includes recipes for besitos de coco (coconut kisses), rum cake, sofrito bloody marys, and anticuado, an old-fashioned made with rum.
With stunning photographs that showcase the geographic diversity of the island and the vibrant ingredients that make up Puerto Rican cuisine, this cookbook is a moving story about discovering our roots through the foods that comfort us. It is about the foods that remind us of family and help us bridge childhood and adulthood, island and mainland, birthplace and adopted home.
