Join us in gathering at the grounds of Relia’s Garden on the campus of Nantahala Outdoor Center as we celebrate the life of Aurelia Kennedy.
Bring stories and remembrances of Aurelia and a Thanksgiving dish to share. Nantahala Outdoor Center will provide a main course featuring turkey and dressing.

If you would like to make a donation honoring Aurelia and further her life’s mission, donations may be made through the North Carolina Community Foundation for the Kennedy Endowment Fund. “Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.
Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.
The exhibit features selected pieces from one of the world’s finest collections of over 600 historic brass instruments from the Joe and Joella Utley Collection of Spartanburg, SC. In collaboration with the National Music Museum (NMM) in Vermillion, South Dakota, which will soon house the Utley Collection, Dr. Sabine Klaus, curator of the Utley Collection, worked closely with Tom Strange, Curator and Artistic Director of the Carolina Music Museum to prepare the exhibit.

Are you looking for an excuse to knit or crochet for a good cause? Help make baby hats and blankets and adult hats, scarves, and slippers to support at-risk newborns and homeless adults. Your handmade knitwear will keep our neighbors warm. Volunteers with basic skills in knitting or crocheting are welcome. Please bring your own needles or crochet hooks and a pattern.

Join Ten at the Top for our annual Celebrating Successes luncheon as we recognize businesses, organizations and individuals who are helping make the Upstate a leading place to live, learn, do business and raise a family.
This event is also the culmination of Ten at the Top’s 10th Anniversary Year as TATT has hosted community workshops and events across the 10-county region in 2019.
We are thrilled to announce that our special guest for the luncheon will be South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. He will talk about how collaboration and building partnerships is crucial to the success of South Carolina.
During the luncheon we will be recognizing Ten at the Top’s “Power of 10” Founding Funding Partners as well as organizations and businesses celebrating milestone anniversaries of 20 or more years in 2019. We also will be awarding the Welling Award for Collaboration and the Burdette Leadership Award.
Prior to the luncheon, the five finalists for the 2019 Hughes Investments Elevate Upstate Vibrancy Grants will make their grant presentations. Hughes Investments will also be hosting coffee and networking prior to the luncheon.

What a lovely name for this highly talented trio of musicians! Usually we think of the great Renaissance and Baroque painters who used three panels to tell biblical stories, but Joanna Mulfinger, Principal Second Violin of the GSO, Jessica Elliott, Collaborative Pianist at Furman and the Governor’s School, and Anna Zuehlke-King, Principal Horn of the GSO will paint musical pictures for us that will span the centuries on Thursday, the 21st of November at 7:30! What colors these artists will pour into your ears! With only 80 seats available we urge everyone to make their reservations early. $15 adults, $5 students. Call 520-8807 to make your reservations.
Filling the Gap
Last week South Carolina Women in Leadership (SC WIL) joined Governor Henry McMaster and Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette in calling on more women to consider serving on state boards and commissions.
Hundreds of open seats, as well as those with expiring terms, are appointed by our Governor. Additionally, legislative delegations select nominees for others boards. These are important positions that qualified women could – and should – fill.
When we overlook capable women, we shortchange our state. Board decision-making requires the ability to hear and consider different points of view, which come from people who have different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
Women make up 51.5 percent of the population in South Carolina but are vastly underrepresented in state government. Our co-chairs present diverse backgrounds as they support our work in recruiting diverse and qualified candidates for boards and commissions.
