al·che·my [ˈal-kə-mē] a power or process of transforming the common into the special
The House is on Fire by Rachel Beanland
Richmond, Virginia 1811. It’s the height of the winter social season. The General Assembly is in session, and many of Virginia’s gentleman planters, along with their wives and children, have made the long and arduous journey to the capital in hopes of whiling away the darkest days of the year. At the city’s only theater, the Charleston-based Placide & Green Company puts on two plays a night to meet the demand of a populace that’s done looking for enlightenment in a church.
On the night after Christmas, the theater is packed with more than six hundred holiday revelers. In the third-floor boxes, sits newly widowed Sally Henry Campbell, who is glad for any opportunity to relive the happy times she shared with her husband. One floor away, in the colored gallery, Cecily Patterson doesn’t give a whit about the play but is grateful for a four-hour reprieve from a life that has recently gone from bad to worse. Backstage, young stagehand Jack Gibson hopes that, if he can impress the theater’s managers, he’ll be offered a permanent job with the company. And on the other side of town, blacksmith Gilbert Hunt dreams of one day being able to bring his wife to the theater, but he’ll have to buy her freedom first.
When the theater goes up in flames in the middle of the performance, Sally, Cecily, Jack, and Gilbert make a series of split-second decisions that will not only affect their own lives but those of countless others. And in the days following the fire, as news of the disaster spreads across the United States, the paths of these four people will become forever intertwined.
Based on the true story of Richmond’s theater fire, The House Is on Fire offers proof that sometimes, in the midst of great tragedy, we are offered our most precious—and fleeting—chances at redemption.

The signature event is sure to delight guests once again with a live symphony orchestra playing classical pieces to the choreographed movements of extraordinarily gifted dressage riders and their Grand Prix horses.
This year, Brooke USA inaugurates its own musical ensemble, the Dorothy Brooke Orchestra, dedicated to promoting the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules and the people they serve across the globe. Named after Dorothy Brooke, the founder of the Brooke family of charities, the orchestra, directed by Kyle Elgarten, Assistant Conductor for the Palm Beach Symphony, is comprised of leading musicians from North and South Carolina.
“The experience of live orchestral music with musical freestyle dressage is simply captivating and unlike anything else I had ever seen. Last year, I had the privilege of attending the event and fell in love with Divertimentos & Dressage, not to mention that Brooke USA is a charity very close to my heart,” said Sharon Decker, Chair of this year’s Divertimentos & Dressage and President, Carolinas Operations, Tryon Equestrian Partners at Tryon Resort/Tryon International Equestrian Center.
Starting with registration at 6:00 PM, guests will enjoy a pre-performance reception with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Promptly at 7:00 PM, guests will be treated to a one-hour performance. This year for the evening of music and freestyle dressage, individual adult tickets are $90 per person. To purchase individual tickets, a ringside table at $1,150, or to learn more about other sponsorship and ticket opportunities, please visit BrookeUSAevents.org.
Divertimentos & Dressage is an exciting event that supports the life-saving work of Brooke USA. Brooke USA strives to alleviate the suffering of working horses, donkeys and mules, and the people who depend on them for survival in vulnerable communities across the globe. In fact, 100 million working equines support the lives of 600 million of the poorest people on earth. These animals are the backbone of communities and their best means of making a living. Without healthy working horses, donkeys, and mules, they would not be able to put food on their tables, send their children to school or build better futures for themselves and their families.
“Divertimentos & Dressage is a fantastic opportunity for Brooke USA to expand awareness for our organization while providing the community with an exciting and unique event,” stated Sally Frick, Chair of the Brooke USA Foothills Advisory Council, a member of Brooke USA’s Board of Directors, amateur equestrian, and professional flutist. “The event is so successful that Brooke USA has made a commitment to replicating Divertimentos & Dressage in other markets. This last Spring, we held it for the first time in Wellington, FL and it was a resounding success,” added Frick.
About Brooke USA Foundation (Brooke USA): The mission of Brooke USA is to significantly improve the health, welfare and productivity of working horses, donkeys and mules and the people who depend on them for survival worldwide. We are committed to sustainable economic development by reducing poverty, increasing food security, ensuring access to water, providing a means to education, and raising basic standards of living through improved equine health and welfare. We accomplish this by raising funds and responsibly directing them to the areas of greatest need.
Brooke USA strives to alleviate the suffering and vulnerability of developing communities by funding and implementing programs that improve the quality of life and health of working equines and thereby positively impacting their economic sustainability, protecting the planet, ensuring gender equality, and guaranteeing life on land resilience. We want to see healthy, happy people and equines that work in partnership to achieve sustainable local economies.

“LADY ADHD”: Observations from a Hyperfocused Mind
“LADY ADHD” leaps from the perpetual-motion mind of comedian, quirky genius, and overall rather loud person, Blaire Postman.
Part Stand Up, part Ted Talk, the show is an unexpected, high-energy tour of her neurodivergent brain, her signature flip-chart stand-up comedy pieces, and unexpected clarity she’s received about the world and herself where they overlap.
Imagine if all the open tabs on your computer from a weekend of spiraling down Wikipedia rabbit holes were then woven into a cogent and brutally funny theory about the brain, art, Americana, the boxes we try to force ourselves and others into, and the humor and self-appreciation that can help us break free of them.
On the heels of its packed January 2023 performance, and just in time to kick off ADHD Awareness month, “LADY ADHD” comes to Alchemy Comedy Theatre on Friday, October 20, 2023 and Saturday October 21, 2023 at 7PM.
Some of “LADY ADHD”’s accomplishments, notice & kudos include:
2023 Finalist, Yes And Laughter Lab (entertainment industry comedy incubator)
Official selection to be part of the 20th SF Sketchfest (2023)
Featured run at Caveat theater in New York (June-Sept 2022)
Guest on notable podcasts to discuss “LADY ADHD” and Blaire’s journey embracing her neurodiversity, including Slate Magazine’s “The Waves”; “Just Between Us” and “A Super Bloom with Candice King”
Selected as the closing event at the International ADHD Convention (Virtual Nov. 2021)
Blaire has been a stand-up comedian for nearly 10 years, and has a previous background in improv comedy. As a stand-up, she headlines indy clubs and alt rooms, and features for world-renown comedians in nationally branded clubs around the country.
She also performs regularly in New York at clubs and particularly in respected alt venues on shows such as “Butter Boy” at Littlefield and “Good God” at Union Hall; has been featured on “PBS NewsHour” and on podcasts for her stand-up including “The Jackie & Laurie Show” (named “Comic of the Week”), “The Dork Forest” and many more.
Her stand up landed her spots in comedy festivals including 10,000 Laughs (named “Best of the Fest”), SF Sketchfest, Asheville Comedy Festival, Limestone Comedy Festival and many more.
Also, cats.
As part of the medical school’s reunion weekend, five alumni and faculty will tell their own local legends (true stories) to inspire this fully improvised show. Fifty percent of the proceeds benefit student support needs at USCSOM Greenville.

Part stand-up, part TED Talk, Blaire Postman’s signature high-energy flip chart comedy show about her life with long-undiagnosed ADHD
Come celebrate ADHD Awareness month with this unique traveling solo comedy show. As one reviewer noted, “Imagine if all the open tabs on your computer from a weekend of spiraling down Wikipedia rabbit holes were then woven into a cogent and brutally funny theory about the brain, art, aging, Americana and The Self.”
Since its mid-pandemic debut in late 2021, “LADY ADHD” has toured cities around the U.S., is an official selection to be part of the 20th SF Sketchfest, has been featured on some of the hottest current podcasts, was the closing event at the 2021 International ADHD Convention, and had a run of shows at Caveat comedy theater in New York City.

The 10th annual New South Comedy Festival will feature 10 straight days of comedy with 21 stand-up, improv, sketch, and musical comedy shows with guests from across the country from November 2-11th!
This stand-up show features Zach Stephens, Matt Dieterich, Amber Ritchie, Melly Kazel, LizaBanks Campagna, Carol Johnson, & Kenneth Hughes
The host for this show will be local comic Chris Freeland.
Zach Stephens is a Greenville Native two years into stand up, and a deeply insecure man. This is his debut show for the New South Comedy Festival.
Matt Dieterich has been performing stand up comedy for the past four years throughout the Southeast. He coproduces M and M comedy and has performed in the Charleston Comedy Festival.
Amber Ritchie was raised in rural Alabama, somehow made it to Atlanta, GA where she began performing comedy — often described as real-world trauma mixed with southern charm. She creates/hosts a comedic mental health podcast called Checking-In: A Self Help Book Club. She performs all over the southeast and can’t wait to make you laugh.
Melly Kazel makes standup comedy a one-woman show. She is dedicated to bringing people together through laughter by sharing her most embarrassing moments on stage.
LizaBanks Campagna is a comedian and resident young person. At 23, she is a regular in the DC Comedy scene, performing at local clubs like HotBed Comedy Club and the D.C Improv. After getting on stage for the first time when she was 13, LizaBanks has been a stalwart in the DC Comedy Scene. She’s been featured in the Washington City Paper, Washington Post and even US Lacrosse Magazine, but that was for a different thing. LizaBanks just filmed her first half-hour special “23 and Me” that is set to be released on Youtube later this year.
Carol Johnson has been trying to run away from home, work and the voices in her head for years. Stand-up is the perfect place to hide. She has performed at Comic Strip Live NYC, Laughing Buddha Comedy Showcase with Janeane Garofalo, The Comedy Store La Jolla and Flappers Comedy Club to name a few. She performs regularly with Jimmy Shin. Recent highlights include opening for Andy Bumatai at Stand Up Honolulu and three Kenan Presents The Live Performance Showcase. Her one woman show I’m Free Range premiered at SOLOCOMNYC 2023 and she is currently the Goddess of Humor on LockDown Living Room Comedy Show!
After losing his vision, Kenneth E. Hughes found a new ambition in stand-up comedy. Now, he takes the stage with confidence, thanks to his four-legged straight man, a.k.a. guide dog, Buddy. He also runsmany local stand-up shows with his company 20/20 Productions.
