For the second year in a row, local Spartanburg businesses will participate in 31 days of awareness to support Developmental Disabilities Month in support of the Charles Lea Center Foundation. In 1987, the year that the March National Disabilities Awareness Month proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives, the Charles Lea Center Foundation was established to support the Center and its mission to improve the quality of life for those with disabilities and special needs
Last year the business community rallied to help raise nearly $30,000 to support the Foundation, and 60 plus local businesses are planning a range of community offerings with proceeds benefiting the Foundation this March.
“We are overwhelmed by the response of our ‘Community Champions’, over 60 local merchants who are participating this month by either choosing a day(s), week or the entire month to host what we are calling a “give back” day(s) to the CLC Foundation,” said Marisa Cecil – CLC Foundation President. “Some folks may not know that on average it costs $70 a day or $14,500 a year to support each community member the Charles Lea Center supports.”
Serving the greater Spartanburg area for over 45 years, The Charles Lea Center supports 1,500 community members with disabilities and special needs in Spartanburg County each year by providing a range of services to over 75 locations in the County.
The FR8yard will be back supporting CLCF during their St. Patty’s Day Celebration on March 19th with 10% of proceeds from the day benefiting the Foundation.
Community members are encouraged to patronize the stores, companies, and organizations like ‘Two Doors Down’, a retail store on Main Street, participating in the March awareness month who are making “Dreams Possible” for the individuals with special needs and disabilities right here in Spartanburg County. Upstate International is celebrating our 10 year anniversary of International Month, and we want you to join in on the fun!
UIM is a month-long program of internationally themed events designed to highlight, promote and celebrate the rich international and cultural diversity we all share in and benefit from living in the Upstate. Since it began in 2013, we’ve had over 100 internationally themed events happening throughout the Upstate every March providing opportunities for hundreds upon hundreds of people to be introduced to a variety of cultural experiences. Upstate International is the catalyst that encourages, and the glue that holds together, all of the international events happening in March in an effort to educate and excite the public and celebrate the Upstate’s international diversity and connections.
Thanks to over 50 event hosts, we have been able to offer everything from international coffee and cuisine tastings, university lectures on global issues, various internationally themed musical performances, international film/documentary screenings, bi-lingual story times, various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, international cooking classes, international dance performances and lessons, an international trivia night, an African Gala, a Korea Night, a Be Irish for a Day event, a Caliente Cuba night, international artists receptions and wine tastings, a town hall dialogue about Islam highlighting that knowledge ends extremism, and so much more….
As the world watches the devastating attacks on Ukraine by Russian forces, The Blood Connection (TBC), your community blood center, is offering community blood donors a way to help relief efforts for Ukrainians in need. On March 15 and 16, The Blood Connection will donate $5 to United Help Ukraine for every blood donor who gives in a donation center. While TBC is not able to support blood needs overseas, this is one way that donors can make a positive impact on those in crisis.
United Help Ukraine is a volunteer-based non-profit organization focused on helping Ukrainian citizens in need. Their efforts focus on four areas: medical supplies; personal protective, medical, and survival equipment; humanitarian aid; and raising awareness. The organization collects both physical and monetary donations, and distributes those to people displaced within Ukraine, people of Ukraine affected by the Russian invasion, and families of those wounded or killed during the crisis in Ukraine.
“We at The Blood Connection, like the rest of the world, are saddened by the invasion of Ukraine and share our support for those impacted. We know members of our communities are looking for ways to help, and we hope our donors will take this opportunity to double the impact of their donation, by donating blood in support of United Help Ukraine,” said Delisa English, President and CEO of The Blood Connection.
The Blood Connection operates thirteen donation centers across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. In addition to the $5 donation made in honor of their donation, blood donors between March 15 and arch 16 will receive a $20 eGift card as a “thank you” for their time. To find a center, go to thebloodconnection.org/centers or call 864-255-5000. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are always welcome.
