While having school supplies may simply be an item on the ‘to-do’ list for many parents and guardians, for others, the calculator that their child needs, or a backpack without last year’s broken zippers, may not be in the cards.
These parents—and especially their children—should not have to worry about heading into school without the necessary supplies. This is why the United Way has this drive and, by contributing the supplies our students need to succeed, we’re investing in the future of our community. Together we are stronger. United, we make a difference. #BackpacktotheFuture.
This year’s 2018 school supply drive will be July 9th trough July 27th. If you visit www.handsonasheville.org/schoolsupplydrive, you will see that there are links for that online shopping avenue, a downloadable supply list for going to the store yourself, a downloadable “toolkit” should you decide to hold your own drive, and if you would simply like to donate, in general, to the School Supply Drive’s efforts, there is an option for that as well. Any and all options and the donations we receive help us invest in our future!

MUSIC
The Low-Down Sires have been busy reviving rare early 20th century jazz classics for the past five years, and are known and respected widely as true traditionalists. Consistently hailed as one of the most popular dance bands in the region, the Sires have had the pleasure of performing at events all over the eastern US, in addition to their regular circuit of local swing dances, club appearances, and private parties. Dedicated to the lost sounds of the earliest roots of jazz, and inspired by the compositions and arrangements of King Oliver, Kid Ory, Jelly Roll Morton and other giants from the storied origins of the art form, their authentic sound transports listeners to the streets of Old New Orleans and the barrelhouses of early 20th century Mississippi river towns. Their hot swingin’ style is a surefire hit with audiences everywhere, from concert halls, bars and back-porches, to swing dances and street corners.
FOOD:Come early and bring a little bit of cash so you can enjoy some delicious vegan food. (Typically around $5.)
CLASSES
7pm: Continuing Class (but this one is beginner friendly!): Solo Jazz/ Solo Charleston
Get ready for some solo Charleston and jazz steps! We will be working on a whole lot of vocabulary, new rhythms and steps, and playing around with musicality. Get ready to learn a lot, sweat a little, and build your confidence. Like the name says, it’s solo. No partner necessary. Basics of Charleston steps will be reviewed, so beginners are welcome!
8 pm: Core Class: Intro to Partner Charleston & Jitterbug
This month we will be doing beginner partnered Charleston. Focusing mostly on side-by-side 30s style, we will also add in some jitterbug steps to give your dancing a little more variety and swing. No partner necessary! You’ll get to dance with everyone.
NON-PROFIT
This is part of the ‘Jazz N Justice’ night- every month our dance will be supporting a different non-profit organization, and 10% of the bar sales + your donations to straight to them. This month’s non profit is TBD ***
GIFT CERTIFICATES
Do you want to buy a gift certificate for our classes as a gift, or to pre-pay for a block of classes for yourself? You can purchase gift certificates at the door at our weekly dance! They are $40 for a block of 4, and a great way to dive into the fun world of dance.
