Masters Of American Photography
Jul 28 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Upcountry History Museum

Americans embraced photography in the mid-19th century; 150 years, and countless millions of photographs later, their fervor has not diminished. It is hard to imagine an aspect of 20th- century American life, whether personal or political, intellectual or commercial, that photography has not influenced.

The exhibition examines photography in America from the 1880s through the 1980s, with an emphasis on the first decades of the twentieth century, when the medium was changing rapidly. Themes such as portraiture, landscape, cityscape, still life, motion capture, and cultural history dramatically represent America over this hundred-year period.

The selection features an impressive range of works by some of the most important artists in the history of photography, including Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, and others.

Notable examples from the late 19th and early 20th century Pictorialism movement, which sought to elevate the status of photography to a fine art, are featured. Included are photographs made during the Great Depression to call attention to the challenges of rural poverty. The exhibition also emphasizes the experimental nature and evolution of photographic techniques in the 20th century and the subtle surfaces of prints developed in the darkroom.

Many of the twenty-four works are vintage prints – made by the photographer very close to the time the negative was made – or late prints, made by the photographer or an assistant years later.

Masters of American Photography is a special exhibition organized by the Reading Public Museum featuring works from the Reading’s permanent collection.

Once Upon A Time Interactive Art Exhibit
Jul 28 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Upcountry History Museum

The bilingual exhibition (English and Spanish) is a unique and educational experience that emphasizes the importance of reading and the significance of fairy tales throughout history. From an African jungle to a giant’s castle, visitors explore larger-than-life pages of six of the world’s most famous fairy tales: Anansi and the Talking Melon (Ghana), Beauty and the Beast (France), Jack and the Beanstalk (England), Cinderella (France, China), The Elves and the Shoemaker (Germany), and Lon Po Po (aka: Little Red Riding Hood, China).

Entering the exhibit via a magical portal, visitors will be surrounded by an enchanting storybook kingdom. Each tale is brought to life through its own large-scale environment, interactive components, and costumes.

With six storybook settings designed for children ages 3-10 years old and their caregivers, Once Upon A Time will take traditional story time to a new interactive level. The result is a three-dimensional, fully developed world that resonates with young visitors, while still appealing to the grown-ups in their lives who are just as fond of the beloved stories that were a major part of their own childhood.

Social Fabric Art Exhibit
Jul 28 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Upcountry History Museum

Award winning fiber artist Salley Mavor (born 1955) has spent four decades developing her signature style and working methods, carving out her own niche within the children’s book world and the fiber art community. Mavor’s three-dimensional embroidered tableaus have been used as children’s book illustrations, social commentary, and stop-motion animation.

A Rhode Island School of Design illustration major, Salley left traditional mediums behind, preferring to communicate her ideas with sculptural needlework. From her home studio in Falmouth, Massachusetts, she has illustrated 11 picture books using her distinctive blend of materials and hand stitching techniques. Salley has roots in South Carolina, as her maternal grandmother, Louise Hartwell, (nee Salley) was born and raised in Orangeburg.

For Salley Mavor, a needle is her tool, thread her medium, and stitches are her marks. Mavor’s needlework’s are narrative and sculptural and are presented as miniature stage sets with scenery, props and characters assembled on fabric backdrops in shadow boxes.

The Upcountry History Museum is honored to partner with Salley on a second exhibition project, titled Salley Mavor: Social Fabric. Exploring the irony, tragedy, and beauty of humanity as it “unravels and mends throughout history” the exhibition provides a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages to experience the three-dimensional quality of Salley’s storytelling. Visitors will peek into imagined miniature worlds full of characters, props, and scenery all stitched by hand, and all focused on the importance of social connectivity.

Social Fabric explores cultural diversity, migration, fashion, the natural world, and a range of social narratives, from the everyday to topical subjects. Oversized bas-relief scenarios, presented in shadow box frames, are designed to create conversations between the artist and her audience. For Salley Mavor her wish is that visitors will “connect to Social Fabric in personal and meaningful ways.”

WEST END WALKING TOUR
Jul 28 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Greenville—Falls Park

This tour begins at the very birthplace of Greenville—Falls Park. The same allure of the gorgeous 40-foot natural waterfall that casts a spell on Falls Park visitors today must have had the same impact on the first colonial settler, Richard Pearis, when he arrived in c.1769. Less than a handful of American cities can boast such a waterfall in the heart of downtown. Visitors receive a chronological history of our city beginning with a view of the falls from the newest icon of the city’s cityscape—the award-winning pedestrian Liberty Bridge. At the foundation walls of an 1816 grist mill built by Vardry McBee, guests will learn about the factors that caused this small trading post town to grow into the textile center of the world.

Other highlights of the tour include discussion of some of the oldest buildings still existing along the banks of the river, including the 1882 Huguenot Mill and the Gower, Cox and Markley Carriage factory buildings that are now used for dining and entertainment. On the other side of the river banks, visitors will soak in the magnificent features of the $137 million Riverplace development with its unique mix of restaurants, offices, condominiums, artists’ open studios, a 30-foot cascading waterfall feature, hotel and more.

A stroll back up Main St. into the West End discusses a famous Greenvillian, Charles Townes. This tour will give you a great overview of our city’s past but you’ll also hear about the exciting current projects that are adding to the downtown experience as well as future projects that are going to be transforming us into the future.

Highlights include:

• Ruins of an 1816 grist mill built by the “Father of Greenville”, Vardry McBee

• The 1882 Huguenot Mill – learn how Greenville became the “Textile Center of the World”
• The 1857 Gower, Cox and Markley Carriage factory building, once the largest carriage company in the South
• Riverplace – stroll the river walk while learning about the beautiful complex of fine restaurants, shopping, condos, open artist studios, and more overlooking the Reedy River that has sparked a revitalization of the Historic West End
• The bronze memorial to Charles Townes, a Greenvillian who became the inventor of the laser.
