The program will also feature clarinetists Dr. Kyra Zhang, SCGSAH faculty, and Dr. Cecilia Kang, Furman University faculty, who will perform in Amilcare Ponchielli’s II Convegno. The SCGSAH Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. David Hamilton.

Through a combination of virtuoso manipulation, theatrical illusion, and artistic insight, these original vignettes provide an entertaining and sensitive vision of what it is to be human. The performance explores a range of emotions with characters and actions that are amazingly convincing. The marionettes are engineering marvels, and the quality of movement is extraordinary.

A Seat at the Table: The Chair as Aesthetic and Social Construct CANCELLED

The exhibit of about 40 pieces of art is housed in the facility’s newly renamed and largest gallery—“The Solomon Gallery.” It opened Tuesday, Jan. 7, and will close Saturday, Feb. 29. It features the work of Janet Kozachek, Janet Orselli, Lee Malerich, and Nathaniel Wallace. The public may view the 2-D and 3-D art at no charge Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit’s reception will be Thursday, Jan. 16, 5-9 p.m., during the city’s monthly ArtWalk.

The Utley Collection of Brass Instruments

The exhibit features selected pieces from one of the world’s finest collections of over 600 historic brass instruments from the Joe and Joella Utley Collection of Spartanburg, SC. In collaboration with the National Music Museum (NMM) in Vermillion, South Dakota, which will soon house the Utley Collection, Dr. Sabine Klaus, curator of the Utley Collection, worked closely with Tom Strange, Curator and Artistic Director of the Carolina Music Museum to prepare the exhibit.

Sign up for our mystery bookclub, co-sponsored by our local chapter of Sisters in Crime. Cost includes all books being discussed that quarter. The club will meet at Fiction Addiction on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 12pm-1pm. Each quarter will have a different moderator. Sally Handley will moderate the first quarter of 2020 and her selections are: Iron Lake by William Kent Krueger (January), Watch Me Disappear by Janelle Brown (February), and Lowcountry Boil by Susan Boyer (March). If you already own one of the books, we can sub out another book in our store of equal or lesser cost.

Parallel to the broader battle early twentieth-century American women waged to overturn the socio-political constraints historically prescribed by men and law, female artists of the era struggled to earn access to and acclaim in the country’s cultural arena. Working in a region that trailed the national arc toward gender equality, Southern women artists routinely encountered resistance in their quest to gain parity, especially when their mode of expression was modern in style or subject.
