Ring in an epic New Year on Monday, Jan. 1, with the first sunrise of 2024 — atop Grandfather Mountain. This special event will provide guests with the rare opportunity to visit the mountain outside of regular operating hours and on a holiday.
Sunrise is at 7:38 a.m. Jan. 1, 2024, and the parking gates will open at 6:30 a.m. Due to safety regulations, participants may only visit the Mile High Swinging Bridge area during the event. To help warm up on a likely cold winter’s morning, the mountain will offer a complimentary hot beverage bar and doughnuts for sunrise guests in the Top Shop building. The restrooms in the Top Shop will also be accessible.
Participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear heavy winter jackets, hats, gloves and rubber-soled shoes. The event may be canceled on short notice in case of inclement weather. In addition, a picture-perfect sunrise, unfortunately, cannot be guaranteed.
Tickets for this event go on sale online at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21. Admission to the New Year’s sunrise event costs $50 for general admission, $35 for children (ages 4-12) and $25 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club. Admission includes an entire day’s access to Grandfather Mountain. As the remainder of the park doesn’t open until 9 a.m., participants are welcome to leave the park following sunrise to return later in the day for no additional cost.
This event is limited to 150 guests.
Cancellation/Refund Policy
The majority of Grandfather Mountain events generally sell out and have a waiting list. If you cannot attend this event, please let us know. Full refunds will be given to individuals who reach out by Friday, Dec. 22. This allows time for individuals on the waiting list to make accommodations to attend the event. To cancel your registration, email [email protected] or call 828-733-2013, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
If Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation cancels the event due to inclement weather, full refunds will be given.

Embark on a scenic journey across George Vanderbilt’s Italy with a large-scale outdoor display that combines brilliant botanical designs with authentic messages written by Vanderbilt himself.
Beautifully handcrafted of natural elements, each sculptural postcard depicts a location or landmark Vanderbilt visited more than a century ago. This captivating complement to Biltmore’s Italian Renaissance Alive exhibition reveals Vanderbilt’s passions for travel, culture, architecture, and art as well as his personal experience of such renowned Italian cities as Milan, Florence, Venice, Pisa, and Vatican City.
Adding to the charm and visual appeal of Ciao! From Italy—sure to be a hit among kids of all ages—is the G-scale model train that travels in and out of each postcard in this enlightening display!
GCCA invites you to the opening night of our newest Community Gallery exhibition, “Mono No Aware”, on First Friday, November 3rd from 6-9pm. “Mono No Aware” will be on display from November 3rd – December 20th, 2023 and admission is free during open business hours.
In “Mono No Aware,” exhibiting artist Leigh Mitchell presents over 30 black & white photographs inspired by the ephemeral nature of things. Included in the exhibition are images that metaphorically allude to all the trees humans have cut down and all the pollution humans are adding to the land and atmosphere. Mitchell’s work speaks to the precarious situation and tangled mess humanity and the earth are in and to the eerie sense of foreboding for what may lie ahead. ‘Mono No Aware,’ is a Japanese term meaning “beauty tinged with sadness.” More specifically, the term alludes to the bittersweet awareness that all things inevitably change form or come to an end. Both a deep ache and a deep appreciation accompany the awareness that we don’t know how long human life and the earth as we know it will last. Mitchell’s work in “Mono No Aware” was funded in part from an artist grant from Metropolitan Arts Council.
Join us on a journey into the world of butterflies and plants, and see the complex relationship between monarchs and milkweed. “Monarchs and Milkweed” explores how very survival of these majestic creatures has been shaped over time by one another, traveling through the seasons of a calendar year and revealing how both insect and plant grow and interact, culminating in a massive migration that crosses a continent.
