Area manufacturers continue to announce expansions that are creating new jobs for Upstate residents. These new jobs opportunities are especially welcomed at this time, due to the sluggish economy that our country is currently experiencing. Upstate South Carolina industries that have announced expansions this year include Centeral Textiles, Michelin North America, Preferred Sourcing Incorporated, Nissan North America, KS Bearings, Inc., T & WA, the Madeleine Manufacturing, 3M Corporation and Beverage Air. These companies are adding hundreds of high paying jobs at their respective Upstate manufacturing plants. Central Textiles, an industrial fabrics producer of wall-covering substrates, material for career apparel uniforms, and pocketing for jeans, announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility in Pickens County. The 180,000 square-foot textile facility formerly occupied by Mayfair Mills will add $2 million in capital investment and create up to 180 new jobs in the next few years. More details
Michelin North America, Inc. has announced it will be expanding its earthmover tire facility in South Carolina, which opened in 1998. S.C. Currently, Michelin has invested over $2 billion in the State of South Carolina since 1975. Michelin has 7,957,000 square feet of manufacturing space in the State of South Carolina and employs over 10,000 South Carolinians, 8,000 in the Upstate. Jim Micali, chairman and president, Michelin North America, said, "This is a fine day for Michelin and South Carolina. We are proud to celebrate the expansion of our earthmover tire facility and to solidify our commitment to South Carolina, where we have invested more than $2 billion to date." Added Dick Wilkerson, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Michelin North America Earthmover Tire Division, "This investment will better enable us to serve our customers, not only in North America but in other parts of the world." Preferred Sourcing Incorporated, a company specializing in the inspection of non-conforming automotive parts, announced plans to lease a 20,000 square-foot warehouse facility in Spartanburg County. The facility is located at 265 Parkway East in the Hillside Industrial Park in Duncan. After the completion of office space, the company anticipates operations to officially begin by late December and hire approximately 20 associates by January 2002.Preferred Sourcing Inc. specializes in the third party Quality service of detecting and containing non-conforming material. Nissan will invest about $4 million in the center housed in a leased 186,290 square-foot building situated on 14.69 acres in upstate South Carolina. Nissan's decision to select the site resulted from a number of factors, including strong support received from the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the Greenville Area Development Corporation. The new center is expected to employ about 45 people when it opens in April. More details
With five manufacturing plants located in Germany, Brazil and the United States, KS Bearings Inc. is a worldwide manufacturer of bi-metallic bearings, bushings and washers for the automotive and general industrial sectors. According to company officials, KS Bearings Inc. is transferring some of its product lines to the Fountain Inn facility from Greensburg, Indiana. Other product lines will be transferred to the company's facility in Papenburg, Germany, while a casting and aluminum cladding line will remain in Indiana.

Madeleine Manufacturing, a quality producer of dust ruffles, pillow shams and associated linens, announced a 60,000 square-foot manufacturing operation in Union County. The company's only location also distributes products from its manufacturing plant.Since the startup in May, the new company has grown to a current employment of 70 employees and has a goal of 100 workers by the end of the year. Occupying the former Liebhardt Building on Brown's Creek Church Road Madeline plans on investing $300,000 in capital and creating up to 150 new jobs within the next two years. In addition to the box sealing-tape operation, the facility also produces polyester film used for X-rays films and overhead transparencies. More details Beverage Air is utilizing the South Carolina Center for Accelerated Technology Training (CATT), formerly South Carolina Special Schools, and Piedmont Technical College, in the recruitment and training of new employees for the operation. The company will hire approximately 80 employees to fill a number of manufacturing positions that include assemblers, braziers and solderers and sheet metal fabricators. Beverage Air opened its Honea Path facility in 1996 and is a subsidiary of Carrier Corporation. The operation currently employs 150.
