More About the Event:
We’re gathering the local Spartanburg community to increase awareness around meningitis B, an uncommon but serious illness that took the life of a local high school football player, Keegan Johnson, four years ago.
While anyone can get meningitis, those 16 to 23 years of age are at increased risk.
The event will help to educate parents to talk to their teens doctor about how to help prevent meningitis.
Parents, bring your families along for an evening of education, remembrance, fun and food.

Join us Lyman Methodist Church for their third annual Prime Paws Dog Fun Walk! Saturday, May 11, 2024 Money raised will benefit Lyman MC Prime Time Group and the animals at the Spartanburg Humane Society! The fun will be had on the walking track located beside Lyman Methodist Church, directly across the street from the former back entrance to the Mill. This event is rain or shine! 8:00am registration, 9:00am start time Registration includes: T-Shirt & Doggie Bandana Deadline to register and guarantee your shirt is April 24.
The registration fee is $25 per dog and each participant will receive a Prime Paws T-Shirt , 1 bandana, and a picture with their canine friend.

How can a writer begin a story or get unstuck when they are in the middle of a draft? In this workshop, we will look specifically at (very short) stories to discover what captivates and arrests our attention and what resonates with a reader long after the last line is read. After we discuss examples in class you will be then given a series of writing prompts. Come ready to write and be inspired! Students will produce writing to start a new story or find fresh avenues into a work already in progress. You will receive in-class feedback from the instructor and your classmates. This class can work for fiction and non-fiction writers.
This virtual workshop will be held on Zoom on Wednesdays, June 5, 12, 19, & 26 at 6:00 ET.
Libby Flores‘ writing has appeared in One Story Magazine, The Kenyon Review, Gagosian Quarterly, American Short Fiction, Ploughshares, Post Road Magazine, McSweeney’s, Tin House /The Open Bar, The Guardian, and The Los Angeles Review of Books. She is the Associate Publisher at BOMB Magazine and the 2024 guest fiction editor of the Bennington Review. She has taught creative writing workshops for the Sackett Writing Workshop, Tin House, One Story, Hub City Writers Project, Bennington College, and PEN America. She is currently a visiting faculty member at Bennington College. She lives in Brooklyn, but will always be a Texan. Libby is represented by Sarah Bowlin at Aevitas Creative Management. The need for blood products as vital parts of life-saving medical procedures and treatments is constant. As summer begins to hit its stride, the need for these blood products in the community significantly increases while blood donor turnout typically drops.
The Blood Connection (TBC), your community blood center which serves local hospitals, wants to make the public aware of an urgent need for blood right now and urges the communities it serves to celebrate this Independence Day by volunteering to donate blood to fellow Americans – their neighbors in need – during TBC’s Freedom Week promotion July 1-4.
According to AAA, an estimated 70.9 million Americans are expected to travel more than 50 miles from their homes during the entire week of July 4th this year. With the increase in travel during the summer months, hospitals in our communities have historically seen an increased volume of trauma cases. This is why TBC is urging any community member who is willing, to come out and donate blood. The local life-saving organization stresses that it is the blood on the shelves – waiting in case of trauma events – that saves lives.
“It is imperative that the local community come forward to support the hospitals in their area during this time of urgent need for blood donations,” said Delisa English, President & CEO of The Blood Connection. “Unlike many of the other products used to treat trauma and other injuries, blood cannot be replaced through lab manufacturing or built on an assembly line. Blood must be donated from volunteer donors, who embody the selflessness that is a staple of our nation.”
TBC will have its donation centers open this entire week including July 4 and will continue hosting mobile blood drives July 1-4. As a thank you for donating during this time, all donors will receive $70 in rewards and an exclusive TBC Freedom Week t-shirt.
