Make summer bright for kids in Greenville
The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club needs your help to make this summer the best one yet for kids in our community. For nine weeks while children are out of school on summer break, the Boys & Girls Club hosts its Summer Camp at the Kroc Center in Greenville.

- $160 pays for one child to attend one week of camp, all field trips, as well as covers their t-shirt cost
- $720 pays for one child or half the summer session for two children. This includes field trips and a t-shirt.

A Musical Tour of Turkey
Dr. Monnich plays the Turkish long-necked lute, the saz. He grew up in the Pittsburgh area with a yearly ritual of attending that city’s wonderful international folk festival, which has helped preserve the traditions of the many cultures represented there. He played guitar and balalaika as a youngster, both of which he forgets. On a trip to Istanbul, he became fascinated with traditional Turkish folk music. He acquired a saz, and found Turkish teachers from Cappadocia, Ankara, and Istanbul who he has studied with for over 25 years. His most influential teacher has been Professor Dr. Tevfik Alici. He eventually gathered musicians for a new band dedicated to Turkish music. Ted can be heard featured most prominently on that most Turkish of Turkish songs, Fidayda, which is best played on saz. He plays the saz and the divan, a larger version of the same instrument that gives a very deep, sonorous sound. He also studies Turkish classical and sacred music on tambur. Ted has taught classes and workshops at music festivals and programs throughout the USA, and has performed with his band, Turku, worldwide. Dr. Monnich is a researcher of early Ottoman history, and regularly travels to Turkey for research and lecturing.
The Spartanburg Philharmonic Youth Orchestra is where talented young musicians expand their symphonic knowledge and participate in high quality performances with dynamic conductors.
The Symphony ensemble serves all musicians in grades 8-12 and the Prelude ensemble is open to string students grades 6-9. Support the future of Spartanburg’s musical legacy with a subscription to all three of this season’s exciting concerts.
Elevator access to the main floor. No elevator access to the balconies.
Tickets are non-refundable.
Sofia Talvik is a rare artist and an avid storyteller with a voice comparable to giants like Joni Mitchell, or as the Folk/Americana Magazine NoDepression said it ”A singer/songwriter who is able to evoke the essence of Laurel Canyon circa the ‘60s as expressed in the work of Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Buffy Sainte-Marie and others who were able to paint beautiful tapestries from words and music.”.
Prepare yourself for a unique and intimate evening, not unlike the 70’s coffeehouses and speakeasy’s. You will be up close and personal with a world class act that has played big festivals like Lollapalooza and SxSW and opened for artists like Maria McKee and David Duchovny (X-files, Californication). It is in this kind of setting where she can casually joke and communicate with the audience that her strength as a performer shines the most.
Her delicate songs are performed in an intimate way, showing off Sofia’s angelic voice enhanced only by a tasteful mix of harmonies and delays, accompanied by the steady picking of her acoustic guitar and the rhythm section consisting of her own two feet, bells and a stomp box.
She’s an experienced international touring artist who has toured through 48 U.S states, many of the countries in Europe and far away places like New Zealand.
Her latest album “Center of the Universe” was released in 2023. Throughout the 10 songs on the album, there is a broad range of topics of some of life’s most earnest moments, ranging from the Ukraine War, American women’s rights, the thousands of missing children in the US and the torment of domestic violence survivors across the world. The album went straight into the top 20 on Folk Radio Charts USA in August 2023, with the first single charting in the top 10. The album was considered for a Grammy nomination for “Best Folk album” 2023.

a fine program to awaken and reawaken audiences to the beauty and joy of hearing chamber music.” – Cultural Voice of North Carolina
Winners of a 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the 14th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022, the New York City-based Isidore String Quartet was formed in 2019 with a vision to revisit, rediscover, and reinvigorate the repertory. The quartet is heavily influenced by the Juilliard String Quartet and the idea of ‘approaching the established as if it were new, and the new as if it were firmly established.’ While performing in venues such as Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival, the group cultivates joyful, accessible, and intimate experiences that create community through in-depth relationships and explore the power of the collective to uplift the individual.

Sigal Music Museum’s current special exhibition, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred, highlights items from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, which hails from all over the world. Showing November 2023 – May 2024, Worlds Apart uses a diverse range of historical instruments, objects, and visuals to bring together musical narratives from seemingly disparate parts of the globe.
Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred aims to increase public access to historical instruments from around the world and improve visitors’ understanding of musical traditions at the global level. Expanding beyond the typical parameters of the Western musical canon, Worlds Apart seeks to expose audiences to musical instruments and customs that are often overlooked or exotified. The instruments and other exhibit materials will offer visitors new perspectives on global music and a chance to consider how music is used for prayer and leisure in cultures around the world. By celebrating these stories, the museum intends to further its mission to collect and preserve historical musical instruments, objects, and information, which engage and enrich people of all ages through exhibits, performances, and experiential programs.
Displaying various objects from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred focuses on international musical instruments and cultures, celebrating rites and traditions with ancient histories and contemporary legacies. Frank Edwinn, a successful basso in the mid-20th century, studied and toured internationally, eventually settling in North Carolina, where he taught music at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Throughout his life, he purchased various objects from around the world, aiming to expose students, and himself, to the wide and wonderful world of musical instruments. This impressive collection occupies a unique position for educating audiences unfamiliar with the vast scope of global music.
And, UNCA’s Ramsey Library Special Collections is now processing the Edwinn’s papers and a few recordings that will be accessible next semester!
