SC Women in Leadership is excited to present the August meeting of our Virtual Book Club featuring Raising Our Hands: How White Women Can Stop Avoiding Hard Conversations, Start Accepting Responsibility, and Find Our Place on the New Frontlines, by Jenna Arnold. The meeting will include a moderated discussion around the book’s themes of fighting against complacency, starting to really listen to marginalized voices, and doing our part to promote progress.
We will be reading Raising Our Hands: How White Women Can Stop Avoiding Hard Conversations, Start Accepting Responsibility, and find our Place on the New Frontlines by Jenna Arnold.
White American women are no monolith. As Women’s March National organizer, Arnold has learned from conversations with white women across the US that they do possess common characteristics— ones that get in the way of becoming more engaged as citizens. We’re so focused on checking off our to-do lists, or so afraid of getting it wrong, or so busy trying to sidestep conflict, that we are actively avoiding the urgent conversations we need to have. Time to get off our complacency and move South Carolina forward.
Join us on August 24 as we discuss this incredibly timely book with Founder Anita Garrett moderating.
COVID-19 may have upended our lives, but Fiction Addiction is still your guide to finding books worth your time to read them.

Join us on Monday, September 14 at 7 pm for an In (Virtual) Conversation with Dr. Geffrey Davis featuring his latest collection of poetry, Night Angler. Published in 2019, this award-winning collection reads as an evolving love letter and meditation on what it means to raise an American family. With a deep sense of gratitude and wonder, Davis delivers a heart-strong prayer that longs for home, for safety for black lives, and for the messy success of breaking through the trauma of growing up during the crack epidemic to create a new model of fatherhood.
Dr. Davis will read excerpts and answer questions. Sarah Blackman, Director of Creative Writing at the Fine Arts Center, will moderate.
The event is free, but registration is required.

Join us on Tuesday, September 15 at 7p(ET)/6p(CT) for a virtual happy hour with a local legend, George Singleton.
We can’t say for sure that it will be an hour, but we know it will be happy because it’s the publication date for George’s newest book, You Want More. And if George is the one asking, then yes, we always want more.
George’s voice embodies the South; his stories draw us in. When we open the cover of his book, we are sitting on a porch with a glass of iced-tea … and our certifiably crazy relations on full display. He is a dear friend of the store, and we are always delighted to have his company; we think you will be, too.
