Are you looking for an excuse to knit or crochet for a good cause? Help make baby hats and blankets and adult hats, scarves, and slippers to support at-risk newborns and homeless adults. Your handmade knitwear will keep our neighbors warm. Volunteers with basic skills in knitting or crocheting are welcome. Please bring your own needles or crochet hooks and a pattern.

The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF), the largest patient advocacy group for people with bleeding disorders, and their chapters, including Hemophilia of South Carolina, are partnering with local non-profits to host “Joints for Good” events in their communities. In Greenville, NHF community members are joining Hands on Greenville to help clean up and beautify Cleveland Park.
The “Joints for Good” event is part of a larger initiative, June for Joint Health. Created by the NHF and Sanofi Genzyme, June for Joint Health is designed to raise awareness about the importance of joint health and the role that physical activity plays in improving joint health for those living with hemophilia. The goal is to encourage the hemophilia community to adopt lifelong habits that promote safe, joint-building activities.
Hemophilia is a rare, genetic bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly. It can lead to spontaneous bleeding in the joints and muscles that can result in debilitating joint disease. Clinical studies have shown that patients who commit to conditioning, stretching, exercising and the right treatment may improve their joint health, reduce bleeds and help resolve joints that have recurrent bleeds.
“Joints for Good” service initiatives, such as the one taking place in Greenville, demonstrate that there are many ways to stay active and improve joint health including doing yard work.

Our second shaving event, bigger than before. In case you didn’t already know, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-powered charity committed to funding the best childhood cancer research through signature head-shaving events. Volunteers register to shave their locks at a local event. In the process, they set a fundraising goal and encourage friends and family to donate. These action-packed events have one meaningful goal – raise as much money as we can for lifesaving kids cancer research. And I need folks to sign up as team captains, to hold their own fundraisers and sign up shavees.

The YWCA Racial Justice Workshop is open to our entire YWCA Asheville community – including our staff, volunteers, board, donors, program participants, Fitness Center and community members. This 90-minute workshop will take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 11:30 am and will be facilitated by Gerry Leonard, Racial Justice & Outreach Specialist and Lexus Walker, Tzedek Social Justice Fellow.
With the acceptance letters rolling in and the fees piling up, every penny counts!

REGISTRATION OPENS FRIDAY FEBRUARY 01!
The Highland Brewing Night Flight is everyone’s favorite twilight race and back for its sixth year and, it’s better than ever. The 4.5-mile East Asheville course will take runners through the Asheville Golf Course, through the Beverly Hills neighborhood (where you will be showered with cheers from the residents) and past the WNC Nature Center before finishing back at Highland Brewing Company. This year’s post-race party and awards ceremony will be at the Meadow. Glow swag will be provided, dressing up is always encouraged, and there will be beer waiting for you at the finish line! 100% of race proceeds go to the development of greenways in Asheville and Buncombe County. Produced by Glory Hound Events.

The race is capped at 550 participants. Early registration is encouraged to reserve your place.

Course
The Highland Brewing Night Flight rolling course will take you from Highland to the Beverly Hills neighborhood of East Asheville and through the Asheville Municipal Golf Course. As you leave Beverly Hills there will be a downhill section before crossing Swannanoa River Road and hooking up with Azalea Road before taking Gashes Creek Road to the its end where you will meet up with a trail leading back to the brewery.
The course will be staffed with volunteers and police throughout. Reflective clothing and other blinking lights are encouraged but not required.
While the course is not designed for walkers, walkers who can maintain a minimum pace of 15 minutes per mile are welcome!
Well behaved leashed dogs are welcome to participate.

One Sunday morning, June 8, 2008, a 19 year old woman was jogging in and around her neighborhood, just like most mornings. An unknown man sprang from the bushes, knocking this young jogger down an embankment. She fought back, but she was no match for her assailant. He sexually assaulted and severely beat her. This young woman required much more than The State Office of Victim’s Assistance (SOVA) could provide; her community sprang to action, organizing a charity 5k to help with her mounting expenses.
It is now 2019 and her external wounds have healed. She no longer needs the financial help that her community stepped up to offer, but unfortunately there are others that do. The former 5k has evolved into a certified 5k and 10k and now benefits the Julie Valentine Center, so that they are able to assist others who have experienced sexual assault.Imagine yourself in the shoes of an innocent child who is being abused. Imagine the confusion and anger you feel. Imagine wondering if your home is safe. Imagine thinking there’s nowhere left to turn, and then you discover a place that can help.
Now imagine you are not alone. As an abused child, spouse or sexual assault victim, you meet others just like you who overcame the unspeakable things that happened. That’s exactly why the Julie Valentine Center is here, to help people in your shoes. The inspiration for the team at Julie Valentine Center comes from an infant who was found deceased in a wooded area in Greenville on a cold February day in 1990. The police, so touched by the tragedy, named her Julie Valentine.
Adopted by the community, her legacy has become a symbol of hope for those who have survived rape or child abuse.
