Biltmore-Kiwanis 15k/5k Classic
May 5 @ 7:30 am – 11:00 am

A toast to the Kiwanis Club of Asheville as we celebrate the 22nd year of the Biltmore-Kiwanis 15K/5K Classic on the Biltmore Estate and the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis. This majestic course should be on every runners list to run again and again! Starting at the estate winery, we will wind through scenic property, passing by America’s oldest private residence and through the fragrant gardens, taking in the undisturbed beauty that the Vanderbilts fell in love with over a century ago.

Registration
Online registration for the Biltmore-Kiwanis 15K/5K Classic will open at 9:00 AM on Saturday, September 1 and will close on Thursday, May 2 at 9:00 PM.

Start Times
15K – 7:30 AM
5K – 7:45 AM
All races start at Antler Hill Village

Entry Fees
September 1-December 31, 2018: 15K-$55, 5K-$40
January 1-March 31, 2019: 15K-$60, 5K-$45
April 1 thru race day: 15K-$65, 5K-$50

All entry fees include one entry ticket onto the Biltmore Estate (excluding the house) through 1:00 PM on race day.

A spectator ticket is required for each guest that is not running the race or that is not volunteering. These tickets may be purchased at packet pick-up from a Biltmore Estate representative. The cost per race day spectator ticket is $23 plus tax.

Course(s)
Both races are run entirely on the scenic grounds of the Biltmore Estate. During the event, vehicular traffic will be limited and controlled. Both courses are USATF certified. Chip timing will be used for both races. Pre-race training prior to the event is prohibited since the entire course is on paved roads with heavy vehicular traffic and on the private property of the Biltmore Estate. Due to directional flow for traffic, it will not be possible to drive the course as it is to be run. All participants must be off the course prior to 9:45 a.m.

15K Course Description
The 15K course is run entirely on the scenic grounds of the Biltmore Estate. Beginning at the Winery Village area, the course climbs to the Deerpark Restaurant then descends and climbs along the main road to Biltmore House, where runners will loop in front of its massive front doors. Runners will then circle through the Walled Garden, pass by the Azalea Garden and lagoon along the French Broad River, and finish by returning to the Winery. The first half of the course has two challenging hills, while the second half is downhill-to-flat.

5K Course Description
The 5K course is run entirely on the scenic grounds of the Biltmore Estate. The 5K Course is a flat, out-and-back course starting at the Winery and paralleling the French Broad River. It is a great course to get a running PR!

Navy League Presents Dinner Program: Attack on USS Cole
May 7 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Poinsett Club

The Upper South Carolina Council of the Navy League is pleased to announce that Lieutenant Commander Bob Overturf, USN (ret), will be the guest speaker at its May 7, 2019, dinner program at the Poinsett Club in Greenville, SC.

On October 12, 2000, eleven months before the 9/11 attacks, the United States guided missile destroyer USS Cole docked in the Yemen port of Aden to refuel. On that sunny morning, the 8,400-ton destroyer was shattered by an enormous explosion. The ship had been attacked by al-Qaida suicide bombers in a small boat loaded with explosives. LCDR Overturf was part of the crew of nearly 300 and survived the blast that claimed the lives of 17 sailors.

Battered and injured, the crew members spent the next day and a half working to save the ship. There were no waiting ambulances or firefighters to assist, only the shaken crew of the Cole. It took another 36 to 48 hours for another Navy ship to arrive. The crew had to fight for the next 18 days to keep the ship afloat, to survive.

The public is cordially invited to join us for this unique opportunity to hear first-hand from an officer serving aboard the Cole about the events leading up to the attack, the heroic efforts by the crew to save the ship, and the aftermath that affected both the crew and the future of US Navy rules of engagement. LCDR Overturf played a critical role in saving the Cole and for his efforts he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal by the Secretary of the Navy.

Tickets are $33 per person and include dinner. For details and reservation information, please go to: http://bit.ly/NavyLeagueDinner050719 or email [email protected].

The Navy League is a civilian non-profit organization whose mission is to support the sea services: Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and US-Flagged Merchant Marine. It does this through informational programs, support of sea service personnel and their families, youth programs, and other local area programs.
