TRIDEVI: An Indian Dance Drama Extravaganza
Sep 22 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
McAlister Auditorium, Furman University

ICAC along with NSOD is excited to announce its fifth dance drama production, ‘TRIDEVI‘. This production is being made possible due to the enthusiastic response from the Upstate communities in the Carolinas.

The event is a two hour long presentation. The Dance Drama Ballet – “TRIDEVI” is a beautiful combination of song, music, drama and dance and heightens the dramatic moments of the narratives through inclusion of exciting elements of emotions, war, celebration and dances, and a visual treat of mythical places, palaces, mountains, forests, battlefields and cosmic constellations. The music is to be provided by live professional orchestra with the assistance of a female and male vocalist, flutist, drummer (mridangam) and a violinist.

This dance drama will showcase the cultural and spiritual values of India. It will be a visual treat to both adults and children alike, through the portrayal of characters from Mythology.

Come join & support us to help arts flourish right here in Upstate. Especially, art which brings to life the culture and values of a faraway civilization.

In Conversation With Signe Pike
Oct 10 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
M. Judson Books

Join us for an evening in conversation with debut Charleston author Signe Pike about her novel (the first in a trilogy): The Lost Queen.

An engrossing story of bravery, divided loyalties, and conflicted love, THE LOST QUEEN has everything a reader could want in a big, bold novel: courage in battle, enchantment, a changing society at war with itself, smoldering passion, treachery and betrayal, and beautiful writing about the natural world. At the center of it all is a girl becoming a woman who can throw a knife, read her twin brother’s thoughts, and fall in love with one man but marry another. If you liked Outlander or The Mists of Avalon, don’t miss this evening! 7pm. Absolutely free.

Book & a Beer with Terry Barr
Oct 19 @ 7:00 pm
M. Judson Books

We’re bringing together a couple of our favorite pastimes for a laid-back approach to a literary happy hour. Book and a Beer pairs up authors talking about their books and our favorite beer guy, Brett Barest, talking about a new beer. We’re pretty sure these stories are going to complement each other.

This month, we’ll be joined by Greenville’s own Terry Barr and his second memoir, We Might As Well Eat: How To Survive Tornados, Alabama Football and Your Southern Family. In these pages, Terry digs into the rituals, the sorrows, the joys, and pain of living in the South, particularly Alabama and upstate South Carolina. Is being an Alabama football fan a blessing, or an obsession passed down from generation to generation? Should you eat during a destructive tornado, or count your blessings and say your prayers? Can family, food, and football bring all races and ethnic groups together, even in the South?

Terry Barr has been a professor of English and Creative Writing at Presbyterian College for the past thirty-one years. Join us to hear the story behind this story, taste a great new Southern beer, and start your weekend off right. 7pm Absolutely free!

Its the perfect answer to what your book club should be reading next.

Page Pairings
Oct 23 @ 6:30 pm

We’re getting together with our friends at The Chocolate Moose to organize a book-inspired wine tasting (because The Chocolate Moose also has a stellar wine list!) where the qualities of each wine get paired with books that share the same spirit. Your ticket to the tasting includes your choice of one of the featured books. Bottles of wine will be for sale at great prices too. It’s a great date, or a perfect girls night out.

We’ll have Alabama writer Lauren K. Denton back with her novel Hurricane Season, about the tumultuous summer two set-in-their-ways sisters spend with two nieces dropped on their doorstep. We’re also excited to host Spartanburg’s Michel Stone with her novel Border Child, the continuing story of immigration and hope against harrowing odds that reviews have compared to the work of John Steinbeck.

Emrys Reading Room: Jo Hack!
Oct 29 @ 7:00 pm
Velo Fellow

Jo Hackl’s debut YA novel, Smack Dab In The Middle Of Maybe, is the story of Cricket, a resourceful girl with quite a bit to manage in her young life. Wrestling with the loss of her father and disappearance of her mom, she sets out on an adventure in the nearby woods, surviving by her wits and a battered book of outdoor strategies tucked into the pocket of her father’s hunting coat.

Jo Watson Hackl was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, not far from Ocean Springs, where her favorite artist, Walter Anderson, lived and once painted a secret room. When Jo was eleven, she moved to a real-life ghost town, Electric Mills, Mississippi, and spent the rest of her childhood exploring the woods and encountering signs of the former inhabitants. Mr. Anderson’s secret room and the ghost town were Jo’s inspiration for this debut novel. Jo lives with her family in Greenville, South Carolina, where she raises fruits, vegetables, and many, many weeds. You can find her online at www.JoHackl.com.
