Hughes Main Library
The group has been restarted! Saturdays from 2-5pm at the Hughes Main Library in Greenville (Meeting room B).
We are a group of gamers who play the strategy board game known as go (or baduk). We have plenty of equipment and the group is free. We are very happy to teach new players and do teaching games and group game reviews as well.
If you are interested, please join our Facebook group!
Go is an abstract strategy board game for two players, in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. It has very simple rules and is easy to learn, but challenging to master! The game originated in ancient China more than 2,500 years ago, and is one of the oldest board games played today.
Capitol Fools
Feb 17 @ 5:00 pm
Gunter Theatre

What happens when Washington, D.C.’s premiere, political satire group – The Capitol Steps – call it quits after nearly 40 years? Most folks would agree that it was a great run, and the story would end there.

But an intrepid group of cast members and a co-writer would not go quietly into that good night. This band of fools reflected on a world without musical, political satire, and didn’t like what they saw. And just like that The Capitol Fools were born.
While foolish enough to embark on this new journey, they were smart enough to not reinvent the wheel. Fast-paced, laugh out loud show…check. Equal opportunity offenders…check. Skewering both sides of the aisle…check. If a “Steps-style show” is wrong, they don’t want to be right.

The Capitol Fools hold up a mirror to our crazy political culture, providing hilarious song parodies and foolish reflections that continue to inspire belly-laughter. Audiences will continue to see cast members from past seasons of the Capitol Steps performing all the beloved bits, the mind-boggling backward talking spoonerisms, break-neck costume changes, over-the-top impressions, and all-new song parodies reflecting the day’s news. They will give you a memory that will last a lunch time. The spirit, irreverence and D.N.A. of The Capitol Steps lives on with The Capitol Fools!

THE LEHMAN TRILOGY
Feb 17 @ 7:00 pm
The Warehouse Theatre

On a cold September morning in 1844, a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers, and an American epic begins. 164 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, triggering the largest financial crisis in history.

WHY SEE THIS SHOW:  Do you enjoy plays that condense history into a thrilling evening of theater without feeling like a lecture? Do you like it when a small cast portrays dozens of characters throughout a story?  Do you like plays that win Best Play at the Tony Awards?  Fantastic!  You’re going to love THE LEHMAN TRILOGY.

The show is a highly theatrical examination of the American Dream.

WHO SHOULD SEE THIS SHOW:  3 actors play all the roles, so if you liked the virtuoso acting in shows like HARRY CLARKE, THE 39 STEPS, combined with a deep dive into a moment in history like THE THANKSGIVING PLAY, or true life relevant stories to us right now like THE HEATH this is for you.

RUN TIME:  This show is an estimated three hours including two intermissions.

The Spartanburg Philharmonic Symphony No. 4 – Beethoven
Feb 17 @ 7:00 pm
Twichell Auditorium in the Zimmerli Performance Center

A perfect foil to his Third and Fifth, Beethoven’s Symphony no. 4 is a beacon of light in the composer’s canon of darkly dramatic works. This symphony is an uplifting piece full of memorable, intriguing movements and cheerful musical humor. A slow, yet mysterious beginning leads to a joyful, rhythmic romp for the strings and a lyrical, joking theme for woodwinds. The perfect antidote to the doldrums of winter.

Tickets are non-refundable.

Homegrown: Live at the Capitol Theatre (Musical Showcase and Arts and Crafts Market)
Feb 17 @ 7:30 pm
Capitol Theatre

Artistry Amplified: Songwriters’ Showcase heading to Capitol Theatre!
LAURENS, S.C. – Attention all local musicians, singers, artists, and enthusiasts! Mark your calendars for two
extraordinary evenings on Friday, February 16, 2024, and Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 7:30 pm, as the City of
Laurens proudly presents Homegrown: Live at the Capitol Theatre, a remarkable showcase celebrating music, art, and
craftsmanship.

The historic Capitol Theatre, built in 1915 in Laurens, South Carolina, sets the stage for local performers to showcase
their talents and share their original compositions through live performances steeped in storytelling.

After each night’s performances, an interactive applause session will empower the audience to elevate an act through
their cheers, measured by a decibel meter. This engagement will determine the recipient of the Audience Engagement
Award for that particular night, who will receive a grand prize of $500. Additionally, each night’s award winner will
secure a paid opportunity to open for the headliner at Freedom Fest 2024.

Alongside the performances, the theatre’s lobby will transform into a vibrant marketplace hosting booths where local
artists, artisans, and craftspeople can display and sell their creations.

Signing up is easy! Visit the event website at www.homegrownshowcase.com to submit your application. But don’t
delay—sign-ups close on Sunday, December 31st. Each accepted entry into the showcase will receive an honorarium
of $200, disbursed within three (3) weeks after the event. The lineup will be gradually revealed, starting January 2024,
on the Road to Homegrown Blog and Social Platforms,

“The Capitol Theatre is the perfect venue for music enthusiasts to delve into our region’s vibrant music scene,”
remarks Hunter Holmes, event organizer and esteemed local folk musician. “Homegrown presents an unparalleled
chance for performers to gain well-deserved recognition, claim prizes, and elevate their profiles. When artists unite,
there’s an incredible power in cross-promotion and collaboration. The synergy created by our combined efforts
elevates individual profiles and generates an electrifying buzz that resonates throughout the community.”
Tickets are available now! Guests are encouraged to secure their seats in advance at www.homegrownshowcase.com

Wesley Schulz and Tessa Lark: Fusion and Fantastique
Feb 17 @ 7:30 pm
Peace Concert Hall

Wesley Schulz, conductor
Tessa Lark, violin
Anna Clyne: Masquerade
Wynton Marsalis: Violin Concerto
Hector Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique

Wynton Marsalis’ Violin Concerto is a showstopping piece that vibrates with energy at the intersection of jazz and classical music, a fusion genre often referred to as “Third Stream.” A native of Kentucky and highly-acclaimed fiddler as well as a classical virtuoso, GRAMMY nominated violinist Tessa Lark is the perfect artist to bring this piece to Greenville. Fusion is where this violin luminary lives.

In addition to being written for a huge orchestra of around 90 musicians, Hector Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique stands out for the full-on macabre it provokes. Inspired by the composer’s romantic obsession with a Shakespeare actress, this Gothic-style piece’s most obvious literary counterpart is the work of Edgar Allan Poe.

August Wilson’s “Fences”
Feb 17 @ 8:00 pm
Center Stage

Excluded as a black man from the major leagues during his prime, Troy’s bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. While society is changing, has the change come too late for Troy?

Fences, the sixth in THE AMERICAN CENTURY CYCLE, the ten play collection by August Wilson, takes place in 1957, two years after the Montgomery Bus Boycott began, ten years after Jackie Robinson broke the color line that by so-called “gentlemen’s agreement” kept African-American players out of the major leagues (and two years before the Red Sox became the last team to include a black player on their team), six years before the March on Washington, seven and eight years before the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. In other words, it takes place during the early years of a slow, long-overdue change. Troy is supported by a devoted wife, Rose, and a great friend, Bono, but he’s struggling with the times, challenging his bosses about the racial disparities of the time, trying to raise his sons his way while they push for their own way, and wrestling with temptations related to love and identity.

This beloved classic American tale was revived in 2010 starring Denzel Washington in the lead role and earning a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play among other awards.

Content Warning: This play includes the use of Mature Language

2024 Carl Sandburg Poetry Contest is open with a theme of “Memory”
Feb 18 all-day
online w/ Carl Sandburg Home

Carl Sandburg wrote countless words in an array of different genres, including poetry, children’s stories, journal articles, as well as a biography and autobiography! He wrote of love and nature, dreams and struggles. This year’s theme of “Memory” is echoed in much of his works. ““Under the summer roses, when the flagrant crimson, lurks in the dusk, Of the wild red leaves, Love, with little hands, comes and touches you with a thousand memories, and asks you beautiful, unanswerable questions.” Carl Sandburg

Poems submitted for the 2024 contest should reflect the theme of “Memory.” By definition, “the process or power of recallling something learned or experienced from the past” Note: Poems do NOT need to be titled Memory, as long as the poem itself relates to the theme.

Students are invited to submit a poem to Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site’s annual Student Poetry Contest. The contest encourages youth to explore writing their own poetry and is open to students nationwide!

  • Submissions are accepted from grades 3-12 and must be submitted by email by Monday March 4, 2024. See below for submission rules.
  • Winners will be notified by April 7, 2024, and will be invited to participate in a virtual celebration program on Sunday, April 28.

Nature’s Blueprints: Biomimicry in Art and Design
Feb 18 @ 8:00 am – 7:00 pm
NC Arboretum

Baker Exhibit Center

In an age of complex environmental challenges, why not look to the ingenuity of nature for solutions? The forms, patterns, and processes found in the natural world—refined by 3.8 billion years of evolution—can inspire our design of everything from clothing to skyscrapers. This approach to innovation, called biomimicry, is becoming increasingly popular.

Nature’s Blueprints is supported in part by The North Carolina Arboretum Society, The Laurel of Asheville, RomanticAsheville.com Travel Guide, and Smoky Mountain Living Magazine.
