Stories of Struggle: The Clash Over Civil Rights in South Carolina
Feb 22 all-day
Online w/ SC Women in Leadership

In the premier episode of the WIL Listen podcast, we commemorate Black History Month with Anita Garrett’s interview of author Claudia Smith Brinson about her book Stories of Struggle: The Clash Over Civil Rights in South Carolina.

Stories of Struggle is a book of South Carolina stories. Stories of hate, intimidation, violence and murder. And stories of devotion, courage, and perseverance. Stories of lesser-known civil rights leaders and individuals dedicated to making better lives for their children, despite their activism resulting in physical abuse, punishment, loss of livelihood, and families torn apart. These intimate stories, both heartbreaking and inspiring, shine a light on the progress achieved by nonviolent civil rights activists while also revealing white South Carolinians’ often violent resistance to change. Claudia shares the stories of sacrifice of these brave, modest, benevolent, courageous and dedicated leaders, and how the progress they produced offers hope for the future.

Claudia Smith Brinson worked as a journalist for more than 30 years in Florida, Greece, and South Carolina. Her accolades include dozens of state and regional awards for excellence. She held the Harriet Gray Blackwell Endowed Professorship at Columbia College for a decade, where she designed and led the Writing for Print and Digital Media program. She is the mother of two and mentor to many.

Anita Garrett is a management consultant and image activist who has worked in the fields of philanthropy and business development for more than 25 years. She is a founding board member of SC Women in Leadership. Her career reflects a marriage of her passion for social justice, gender equity and resource development and her desire to be a voice for marginalized communities. For her unwavering leadership efforts, Anita has received numerous awards.

Ready2Run: What Women Candidates Need to Know

Presented in partnership with the Center for American Women and Politics

Ready to Run® is a non-partisan campaign training program to encourage women to run for elective office, position themselves for appointive office, work on a campaign, or get involved in public life in other ways. This series of five sessions will cover fundraising, positioning oneself for elected office, media training, the nuts and bolts of organizing a campaign, mobilizing voters, and crafting a message. You may register for all or selected sessions in the series.

This first session covers everything female candidates need to know to get started. One of the nation’s leading pollsters, Celinda Lake, will provide skill-building information around public opinion research on women candidates, including key findings on the advantages and disadvantages facing women running for office, the likeability vs. qualifications conundrum, and messages that are convincing to voters to support women candidates.

21 Days of Kindness Challenge
Feb 23 all-day
Online w/ City of Spartanburg

Kindness logo

Following the City’s annual Unity Week, community partners have come together to issue a community-wide Kindness Challenge kicking off February 8th.

Each year, the City of Spartanburg’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Week events offer an opportunity to reflect and consider how far we have truly come as a nation and as a community and how far we have yet to go in our pursuit of a world that is more kind, more just, and more fair.

This year, inspired by Dr. King’s notion of a “beloved community” and in understanding the power of kindness to foster the understanding and dialog essential for genuine systemic change, the City along with its partners Mary Black Foundation, Spartanburg County Foundation, and United Way of the Piedmont are issuing a “21 Days of Kindness” challenge to all Spartanburg residents beginning on February 8th.

The group of community organizations are launching the effort with the belief that being kind does not mean simply sitting back and allowing old systems to continue to divide us as a nation, but it is kindness that helps us to consider our neighbor’s perspective with empathy and respect instead of malice and resentment. Kindness alone cannot dismantle the barriers between communities, but a shared, reciprocal kindness can become a vehicle to help each of us recognize our shared humanity in the face of a coarsening civil discourse and disunity in our nation.

To promote this campaign, the City will begin sharing ideas and featuring examples of everyday kindness in our community through social media channels using #KindSpartanburg as well as the City’s website.

The city and its partners challenge you to join us in this effort to demonstrate the power of kindness and to live out the vision and aspirations of Dr. King’s “beloved community.”  Please join us!
