The Ecological Gardener + A Songbird in My Garden
Mar 29 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm
zoom

The Ecological Gardener-March 15, 2022. 3:00-4:30 PM ZOOM CLASS

Even the most unassuming garden is teeming with life. An ecological gardener notices the diverse interconnections of plants and animals in their landscape. During our discussion, we’ll cover the basics of ecology, plant selection for wildlife, and how to restore the ecology of your garden space.

Sheridan Samano is an award-winning teacher, biologist, and international travel guide. She has years of experience observing birds and their relationships with native plant communities in the field. For more than a decade, she taught biology at Community College of Aurora in Colorado. Since 2002 she’s taught classes highlighting Colorado’s plant and animal communities for Denver Botanic Gardens. She is also the author of Best Birding Hikes – Colorado’s Front Range.

A Songbird in My Garden-Mar. 29, 3:00-4:30pm. ZOOM CLASS.

Humankind’s age-old love affair with birds. Looking back and moving forward ~ We’ll discuss our relationship with birds – their allure, how past choices have led to dramatic declines in bird populations, and most importantly, how our choices today can help these populations rebound by our building vibrant, healthy, and ecologically functional environments; one garden at a time.”

Taught by Chris Davenport. Before Chris joined the staff of Reems Creek Nursery in 2016, he spent fourteen years with Head-Lee Nursery in Seneca, SC; five years with Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA; and two years with the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Chris is an avid home gardener and bird watcher. He loves to travel with his family to view cultivated gardens and explore untrampled wilderness.

World Bonsai Day
May 14 @ 8:00 am – 8:00 pm
The North Carolina Arboretum

Join The North Carolina Arboretum as it celebrates the re-opening of its outdoor bonsai display for the 2022 season as part of the twelfth annual World Bonsai Day, an internationally celebrated event dedicated to furthering bonsai awareness and appreciation world-wide.

What is Bonsai?

Bonsai is a challenging and rewarding horticultural activity, in which ordinary plants are grown in an extraordinary way. Through rigorously applied cultivation techniques, trees, shrubs, vines and even herbaceous plants are kept in a miniaturized state, developed into artistic shapes and then displayed in special containers.

What makes the Arboretum’s bonsai endeavor unique among all other public collections in the United States? Regional Interpretation. Visitors will find the Arboretum’s bonsai collection of more than 100 specimens carefully cultivated with a Southern Appalachian accent. The collection draws inspiration from the traditional roots of bonsai, but takes the form of a contemporary, Southern Appalachian influenced American garden. Plantings in the landscape include species and cultivars of American, European and Asian origin.

Arts in the Garden: A Celebration of the Arts and Nature
May 14 @ 12:03 pm – 1:03 pm
Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve
The event, which is free and open to the public, will showcase local artists, performers
and authors in the beautiful setting of the woodland garden. Artists and musicians will be set
up on the lawn at the entrance to the garden and throughout the garden paths and rooms.

“Arts in the Garden” is a “friend raiser” for both Hatcher Garden and the Spartanburg
arts community. Event organizer, Julia Burnett, is excited by the enthusiasm that local artists
and performers have shown for getting back out into the community with this event that offers
something for everyone.

“We were all set for ‘Arts in the Garden’ in May of 2020 when everything was shut down
due to COVID-19,” Burnett says of an event that she, as an artist, is excited to finally be able to see come to fruition. “It was a huge disappointment to the arts community in Spartanburg
when we had to cancel the 2020 event, but we knew that everyone’s health and safety were of paramount importance at that time.”

More than 50 artists are scheduled to be creating and selling their art throughout the
day. Exhibits include pottery, ceramics, leatherwork, sculpture, watercolor, photography,
jewelry and painting, as well as mixed media.

Authors from Hub City Press will also be available, talking about their books and signing
copies. Brock Adams, author of “Ember” and “Apocalypse Yesterday,” and Jill Criswell, author of “The Frozen Sun Saga,” will be at the Hub City table at 10 a.m.; Morgan Thomas, author of the short story collection, “Manywhere,” at 11 a.m.; and Marjy Marj, author of many books
including “The Shimmigrant” and “Same Elephants,” at 12 noon.

Guitarist David Denham will be on the Observation Deck from 10 – 1 p.m., Peter Grzan
and Chris Frantz will perform from 1 – 3 p.m., and Fayssoux McLean and Walt Wyatt from 3 – 5p.m.
