Stinney: An American Execution
Jul 22 @ 7:00 pm
The Kroc Center, Fred Collins Performing Arts Theatre

An involuntary symbol of sickening injustice, George Junius Stinney Jr. was executed at the age of 14. Having been wrongly accused and convicted of the rape and murder of two white girls in Alcolu, SC in 1944, George became the youngest person legally executed in 20th-century America. Stinney tells the story of George, his family, his community, and the jury of ten white men that sent an innocent Black boy to the electric chair. A brand new opera with roots in both gospel and electronic techniques, Stinney: An American Execution investigates the racial tensions in South Carolina and the community’s response to these murders, questioning the integrity of the legal system and the mishandled evidence that condemned him to die. Supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Glow’s production marks the Southeastern premiere of this opera.

Due to the intense subject matter, this opera is intended only for audiences 16 and older. It contains graphic and mature scenes that may be upsetting to some people. Viewer discretion is advised.

The 26th Annual Upstate Shakespeare Festival: OTHELLO
Jul 22 @ 7:00 pm
Falls Park

The 26th Annual Upstate Shakespeare Festival will feature MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING from May 26th to June 26th, 2022.  OTHELLO will soon follow premiering on July 14th until July 31st, 2022.

While many people might associate Shakespeare with high school English class, his works are true classics that help us understand different cultures, different people, and different times. In fact, it’s been said that Shakespeare was ‘not of an age, but for all time.’ Now, more than 400 years after his death, that statement still rings true.

Knowing that many people don’t seek out Shakespearean plays, we sought to bring Shakespeare to the people in a fun, educational, free, and accessible way. The Warehouse Theatre put on our first ever Upstate Shakespeare Festival back in 1995. Since then, it has truly become a Greenville Tradition.

The Upstate Shakespeare Festival takes place each summer. Usually one show runs from May to June and another from June to July. Shows begin at 7:00pm (arrive early to get a spot!) and run Thursday through Sunday each week during the run of shows.

Tinsley Ellis and Tommy Castro + The Painkillers
Jul 22 @ 7:30 pm
Genevieve's-TD Stage

Spellbound by blues and rock artists at a young age, Tommy Castro picked up a guitar at age ten and never looked back. The B.B. King Entertainer of the Year has curated a sound and style built upon an unshakeable musical foundation – a dynamic mix of guitar-fueled blues, testifying Memphis-soaked soul, Latin-tinged funk and “grab-you-by-the-collar” vocals. In 2012, Castro’s music reached new heights with the formation of The Painkillers, and together Tommy Castro and The Painkillers have become one of the most in-demand live roots music arts performing today.

Tinsley Ellis is a world-renowned Southern blues-rock guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. The road warrior has captivated and amazed fans across the globe with his instantly recognizable sound that melds muscular rock ‘n’ roll and hard blues. His impressive catalog and stellar musicianship have earned him the love and respect of fellow musicians, like Buddy Guy, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gov’t Mule, Widespread Panic and Joe Bonamassa (who called Ellis “a national treasure”).

West Side Story
Jul 22 @ 8:00 pm
Flat Rock Playhouse
West Side Story. July 1 - 30.

The number one requested musical from our 2019 show survey: you asked for it, you got it! From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the ‘American’ Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of fear, violence, and prejudice remains one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching, and relevant musical dramas of our time. With a score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story is widely regarded as among the best musicals ever written.
