“Shine and Dine” on the railway! We cordially invite you to hop on board The Carolina Shine, GSMR’s All-Adult First Class Moonshine Car! We will be proudly serving hand crafted, triple-distilled, craft moonshine. Some of the smoothest tasting moonshine in the Carolinas!
Offered on the Nantahala Gorge excursion, this shine and dine experience begins in a renovated First Class train fleet car, The Carolina Shine. The interior features copper lined walls filled with the history of moonshining in North Carolina. Learn about the proud tradition that the Appalachians established when bootlegging was an acceptable way of life and local home brews were the best in town. Read about Swain County’s very own Major Redmond, the most famous mountain moonshine outlaw of the 19th century.
Once your appetite for knowledge is satisfied, enjoy sample tastings of flavors like Apple Pie, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cherry, Peach, and Strawberry moonshine. If the samples are not enough, there will be plenty of Moonshine infused cocktails like Copper Cola or Moonshiner’s Mimosa available for purchase.
GSMR is excited to feature multiple craft NC based distilleries to serve our guests only the best! Each jar is handcrafted and authentically infused with real fruit, the way moonshine was meant to be made.
Passengers will also enjoy a full service All-Adult First Class ride with an attendant serving GSMR’s freshly cooked pulled pork barbeque rubbed with Cajun spices then slow-roasted to perfection served with southern sweet cornbread muffin with honey butter, coleslaw, and cinnamon apples then finish with a delicious piece of Sea Salt Caramel Cheesecake. Riders will also receive their very own Carolina Shine mason drinking jar, refillable with soda beverages and tea throughout the day, and a souvenir GSMR tote bag (1 per couple/party).

Join us on Wednesday, September 16 for a Virtual Page Pairing with author John Cribb. John will be discussing his hot-off-the-press book, Old Abe.
Old Abe is the story of the last five years of Abraham Lincoln’s life, the most cataclysmic years of our nation’s history. Full of epic scenes from American history as well as little known, fascinating details of Lincoln’s presidency, it probes the character and spirit of America. This is a story that involves much suffering and loss, but in the end it is a hopeful story, both for the main character and for the nation.
Our wine maven, Ashley, has worked with our fabulous friends at Mission Grape Co. to select the perfect drink-along for such epic suffering and hope, an Alhambra Reserva 2018. You can choose to purchase the book and the wine ($40) or just the book ($25).
Join us for a glass of wine and a political discussion that leaves you feeling inspired rather than bruised.
Here’s how it works:
You purchase the ticket and come by the store to pick up your book (and wine, if applicable) when it’s convenient for you.
You log on to Zoom using the link provided at purchase.
You enjoy an interesting conversation and leave with a little lift of hope.

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) announced a new option for teachers and principals to receive free online training that will equip them to provide effective virtual instruction. The training is available for up to 6,000 educators over the course of 2020-21 and is being funded by part the SCDE’s federal CARES Act allocation.
In the first week, more than 1,700 educators have signed up for the sessions, which outline what the South Carolina Teaching Standards 4.0 rubric looks and sounds like in a virtual setting. The full series covers topics ranging from planning, delivering instruction, and providing an engaging virtual classroom environment, with two separate tracks for principals and teachers to receive role-specific guidance. The sessions are optional, and educators can decide when to take each of the three 90-minute sessions based on their schedule, with after-school, evening, and weekend opportunities.
Training sessions are taught live and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with sessions spread out over the fall and spring semesters. Educators can now register for fall 2020 sessions, and spring semester dates will be announced on December 1. Current South Carolina educators can learn more and register for the free training on NIET’s website, niet.org.

Greenwood Soup Kitchen is in dire need of volunteers to feed the hungry daily. Volunteer numbers have dropped sharply during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re down to three or four people,” said Norm Fawcett, Greenwood Soup Kitchen chairman. “We’re struggling to prepare soup and meals. We’re looking for a dozen or more volunteers, just one morning per week. Volunteers do not have any contact with our guests. We’re doing take-home meals. Our dining room is closed.”
The urgent volunteer need comes after the soup kitchen reopened its doors Aug. 10, to distribute take-home meals outside the United Center for Community Care. The nonprofit closed briefly earlier this month after a volunteer tested positive for COVID-19.
Kitchen and dining facilities have since undergone industrial cleaning and sanitation by a licensed company, Fawcett said.
Meals are distributed outside the dining room’s main entrance. Masks and gloves are required of volunteers preparing meals at this time.
