Are you curious about why birding has become America’s fastest growing hobby? Would you like to identify some of the locals around your backyard birdfeeder? Or are you an expert birder already? Regardless of your birdwatching credentials, this hike is for you. Explore one of the park’s trails with a professional birding guide and learn more about our incredible feathered neighbors.
May’s focus will be spring migrants.
Conestee Nature Preserve is a birding hotspot in the Upstate! Our location and the diversity of habitats provide the perfect landing spot for lots of different bird species. This event is great for those who have never put on a pair of binoculars or for those just getting started with their birding journey.
During the workshop you will learn:
- How to use binoculars, which we will provide for every participant.
- The key characteristics to look for when trying to identify a bird.
- Scientific terminology that will help you when looking at field guides.
- Which apps and field guides we recommend.
Classes are designed to help students (ages 5-7) discover the fascinating world of animals. Classes combine a themed lesson with crafts, activities, trips into the zoo, and animal encounters in the classroom. Program length is 1.5 hours from 10:00 am – 11:30 am.

Shrink down to a bug’s size as we explore the marvelous world of insects!
Part 2 – We’ll depart from a different entrance & explore a different part of Conestee’s storied past!
“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” – Edmund Burke
Ok, this hike is not that serious. But, we still think it’s great to learn where we’ve been and how we got here!
Haven’t you ever wondered what this CNP property looked like 100 years ago? Or what it was used for? Maybe you’ve been curious to learn more about the Reedy River, the dam and mills, and the storied pollution that occurred as a result of that industrialization? Join our staff to learn all you want to know and more!
You’ll leave this program with a better appreciation for the early development of Greenville, as well as the unique ecological resource that Conestee Nature Preserve now provides to both wildlife, and this community.
