Wade Hampton High School

FREE Admission. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Though born in the 19th century (1881), Pablo Picasso was for more than 60 years of the 20th century literally the center of the Art universe. Even today in the 21st century, Picasso’s influence is still pronounced. This tiny man had an outsized impact on the world since almost every artistic current or trend came through his studio or bore his influence. Up until his death in 1973 this painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright was one of the most significant people in the world.

Dr. Doug Mishler’s presentation will focus on Picasso’s most formative years between 1900 and 1910, his Paris years.

THE LEHMAN TRILOGY
Feb 10 @ 7:00 pm
The Warehouse Theatre

On a cold September morning in 1844, a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers, and an American epic begins. 164 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, triggering the largest financial crisis in history.

WHY SEE THIS SHOW:  Do you enjoy plays that condense history into a thrilling evening of theater without feeling like a lecture? Do you like it when a small cast portrays dozens of characters throughout a story?  Do you like plays that win Best Play at the Tony Awards?  Fantastic!  You’re going to love THE LEHMAN TRILOGY.

The show is a highly theatrical examination of the American Dream.

WHO SHOULD SEE THIS SHOW:  3 actors play all the roles, so if you liked the virtuoso acting in shows like HARRY CLARKE, THE 39 STEPS, combined with a deep dive into a moment in history like THE THANKSGIVING PLAY, or true life relevant stories to us right now like THE HEATH this is for you.

RUN TIME:  This show is an estimated three hours including two intermissions.

August Wilson’s “Fences”
Feb 10 @ 8:00 pm
Center Stage

Excluded as a black man from the major leagues during his prime, Troy’s bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. While society is changing, has the change come too late for Troy?

Fences, the sixth in THE AMERICAN CENTURY CYCLE, the ten play collection by August Wilson, takes place in 1957, two years after the Montgomery Bus Boycott began, ten years after Jackie Robinson broke the color line that by so-called “gentlemen’s agreement” kept African-American players out of the major leagues (and two years before the Red Sox became the last team to include a black player on their team), six years before the March on Washington, seven and eight years before the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. In other words, it takes place during the early years of a slow, long-overdue change. Troy is supported by a devoted wife, Rose, and a great friend, Bono, but he’s struggling with the times, challenging his bosses about the racial disparities of the time, trying to raise his sons his way while they push for their own way, and wrestling with temptations related to love and identity.

This beloved classic American tale was revived in 2010 starring Denzel Washington in the lead role and earning a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play among other awards.
