In 2017, voters approved a one percent sales tax that has funded a new Courthouse and more. In November, voters will decide whether the one percent sales tax is continued, with revenue going to road projects. Overall, Spartanburg County roadways earned a failing grade. The penny sales tax is the most cost-conscious way to fix roads and fix them quickly, especially with 34%-39% of the cost covered by non-residents. Learn more about the condition of our roads and a potential solution to fix them with Spartanburg County Administrator Cole Alverson, and hear the benefits of voting YES in November with OneSpartanburg, Inc. President/CEO Allen Smith.

The Upstate Entrepreneur Ecosystem welcomes Travis Sheridan, the Chief Community Officer of Wexford Science and Technology. Join us for lunch as Travis outlines the tools and tactics you can use immediately to build a meaningful community. These tools have been refined over nearly 30 years of testing in the field — with much success and a few failures.
Want to stand out from the crowd? Want your reach and influence to grow organically? What to turn admirers into advocates? It starts with building an authentic community around your brand, your company, your service, or your organization. There are ways to create moments of serendipity, but it can’t be left to chance — it must be engineered.
In this session we will spend time Topics include: – Some will. Some won’t. So what? Move on. – I want to meet you. I want to know you. I want to help you. – Attract. Develop. Promote. – So an attorney and an acrobat walked into a bar… – It’s not about you! (Sorry, Dr Phil) – Kindtagious: The ideal pandemic
Travis holds the position of SVP & Chief Community Officer at Wexford Science & Technology, liaising closely with university partners, civic leaders, and community groups within Wexford’s Knowledge Communities. He pioneers the creation of inclusive urban spaces, directs community engagement strategies, identifies fresh partnerships and initiatives, establishes funding means for diverse innovators, and reinforces connections between the Knowledge Community and its geographic context. Additionally, he heads the Wexford SciTech Seed Fund’s investment committee.
Before Wexford, Travis made significant strides as President of the CIC Venture Café Global Institute, managing its global expansion. Earlier, as the Assistant VP of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at St. Louis Economic Development Partnership, he oversaw a business plan contest, launched a biotech incubator, and managed multiple business incubators.
Travis continues to contribute by serving on the boards of various local organizations, including the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership, Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis Public Radio, and the Chairman’s Circle and Policy Council of Greater St. Louis Inc. He is also a founding member of the St Louis Charter Commission.
Armed with a bachelor’s in psychology, a master’s in organizational behavior, and doctoral coursework in organizational leadership, Travis applies innovation and entrepreneurship to foster community and economic growth. A resident of Old North STL, he proudly lives in a house he built from shipping containers.
The first penny sales tax, passed by voters in 2017, led to significant facilities improvements across Spartanburg, including a new Spartanburg County Courthouse, and a joint City-County Government Complex. In November, voters will head to the polls again to decide if another six-year penny sales tax is passed, with all funds raised by the new penny to be directed to roads. Learn the benefits of voting YES in November with OneSpartanburg, Inc. President and CEO Allen Smith and County Administrator Cole Alverson.
