The Blood Connection’s 60th anniversary Donate today!
Nov 5 @ 7:00 am – 7:00 pm
The Blood Connection--Greenville

Sixty years ago, a doctor from Greenville, South Carolina saw a need: a need for a community blood center that supported the people who lived, worked, and sought care in the Upstate of South Carolina.  Sixty years later, his vision for that community blood center is the bedrock of The Blood Connection (TBC) – a non-profit community blood center serving hospitals across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Virginia.  While many things have changed in the past sixty years, TBC’s dedication to its hospital partners and to saving local lives has not.

Despite the current difficulty to collect blood and blood products, The Blood Connection remains steadfast in continuing its mission for the next sixty years to come.  Without volunteer blood donors and community blood centers like TBC, shelves will be empty when neighbors, family, or friends are in need.  Neighbors like Kristen Odom, a mother from Taylors, South Carolina, who received more than twenty units of blood after the birth of her first daughter.  It is because of community blood donors that blood products were available that day, and she has a full life with her husband and two daughters.

“I often think about it in the little things like we celebrate her birthday, it’s a pretty day outside, or we’re at the beach,” said Odom.  “This day I get to enjoy because somebody donated blood. I had this overwhelming sense of gratitude…it just still shocks me to this day…here we are, living a completely normal life…because blood was available and they did what they needed to do right away.”

It is estimated roughly 60% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but only 3% does.  While the demand for blood products is constantly increasing, unfortunately, the number of volunteer blood donors is decreasing.  As the core donor base gets older, and the younger generation is not donating blood at the same rate, TBC is noticing emptier blood mobiles, and fewer people signing up to donate blood.

“We all play a part in supporting the community’s blood supply,” said Delisa English, President and CEO of The Blood Connection.  “We hope people think about what their part will be, whether that is donating blood for the first time, donating blood more often, or hosting a blood drive.  We all have a responsibility to our community to ensure that blood products are available when our friends, family, and neighbors need it most.”

Founded in 1962, The Blood Connection spent the first 16 years of its existence under another name: The Greenville Blood Assurance program.  In 2001, the Board of Trustees adopted the name ‘The Blood Connection’ – designed to better reflect the mission of connecting healthy donors to patients in need. With just a handful of hospital partners when the organization was created in the 1960s, TBC now serves more than 100 hospitals and has expanded from the Upstate of South Carolina to three other states.

The world around us looks vastly different now than it did in 1962, but one thing remains the same: blood still cannot be replicated or made in a lab.  Blood must be donated and is a true gift to those who need blood products to maintain their quality of life.

The Blood Connection is celebrating it’s 60th anniversary by thanking the donors who make its mission possible.  All blood donors between October 31 and November 6 will receive a commemorative ‘60th Anniversary’ pin.  To find a center or mobile location to donate, go to thebloodconnection.org/donate.

Anderson Family: Memorial Blood Drive Honoring Upstate Teen Hunter Allen
Nov 5 @ 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Starr Walking Track (1019 Bowie Street Starr, SC

56: the number of blood transfusions 19-year-old Hunter Allen received during his battle with the flu in 2018, and the number of days he spent in the hospital before passing away due to complications of that illness.  Coincidentally, it is also the frequency at which community members can donate blood to help those, like Hunter, in their community who need those blood products for various treatments.

19-year-old Hunter Allen, of Anderson, was a happy, funny, energetic high schooler, when, in January of 2018, he came down with flu type A.  His condition rapidly worsened, requiring him to be placed on an ECMO device (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), which functioned as his heart and lungs to give his body time to rest and recover.  During that treatment, he received 56 units of blood. Those blood products were available because people in the Upstate took time out of their days to donate blood.

This year, TBC is partnering with Hunter’s family to host two blood drives on November 5.

For every blood donor, $20 will be donated to the Hunter Allen Scholarship Fund, which provides a scholarship for a Crescent High School student, where Hunter attended school.

Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice
Nov 5 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Upstate History Museum

Dinosaurs will roar into the Upstate South Carolina, when the Upcountry History Museum presents Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice. Crossing the threshold of this interactive exhibition means traveling back in time to explore the Age of the Dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice is the first child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding of dinosaurs and their habitats. Designed for young explorers, ages 3-10, the bilingual (Spanish and English) exhibit features three distinct sections that build on a child’s innate curiosity about dinosaurs: Land of Fire (a warm dinosaur habitat), Land of Ice (a cold dinosaur habitat), and a Field Research Station (complete with a Big Dig experience).

The steamy Land of Fire, present day Montana, introduces visitors to the Triceratops, T-Rex and the dinosaurs who called this environment home. Children can circle the land in insect costumes, buzz through a volcano with oozing lava, work through a swampy bog and identify an ecosystem of animals and plants.

No coats are needed for a trip across the Land of Ice where visitors meet the dinosaurs who made their homes in the cold climate of Alaska. Activities include: climbing rocky steps, breezing down an icy slide, and hopping across stepping stones in an icy river.

In the hands-on Field Research Station children and their caregivers don goggles and research vests, as they uncover dinosaur bones in a dig station and examine fossils to identify dinosaurs.

The exhibit builds on the popular fascination with dinosaurs and includes science, history, and literacy based activities to challenge all ages. Sculpted, touchable dinosaurs, featuring the most recent scientific findings about dinosaur colors, textures and structural form create opportunities for young
explorers to investigate clues that the dinosaurs left behind.

FAST LANE: The NASCAR Photography of Darryl Moran
Nov 5 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Upstate History Museum

Darryl Moran’s images depict the frantic pace of race day as well as the camaraderie of the drivers, intimate moments with fans and family members, and the support and spirit of the pit crew. During his tenure, the self-taught artist captured such legendary drivers as Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Terry Labonte, Tammy Jo Kirk, and Harry Gant.

Moran’s pictures were some of the first to capture the emotion of the races and the compassion of the drivers and fans. His images, taken initially for his own interests, caught the eye of NASCAR executives, who felt that they signaled a new direction for the sport’s image, one that focused on a broader scope of experiences and not just the technicality of the race and its winners. Through photographs, memorabilia, and objects, the exhibition explores Moran’s development of this new vision of NASCAR, one that continues to shape the images of the sport today.

The exhibition also examines Moran’s role as a NASCAR photographer, including taking all the gear needed for the day – cameras, multiple lenses, water bottles, batteries, media cards, and more. NASCAR photographers move rapidly from the media center to the garage, to the track, and to the winner’s circle. After the first practice ends its back to the media center to process images, transmit them, and rest for a few minutes before heading to the garage or track to start all over. When there is a full-race the cycle repeats itself – when the race ends it’s a rush to the winner’s circle to get the best spot for a photo of the winner. And finally, it is back to the media center to transmit images to the various media outlets.

In its commitment to connecting Upstate local history with national and global history, the Upcountry History Museum will share the story of Greenville Pickens Speedway which started as a dirt track in 1940. After thirty years on dirt, the Speedway was paved in 1970. On April 10, 1971, Greenville Pickens Speedway hosted the first-ever, start to finish, live televised NASCAR Race. Since then, hundreds of sanctioned NASCAR races have taken place at the Speedway. Though the cars and drivers have changed, the legacy and thrill of racing continues.

Wild Things: The Art of Maurice Sendak
Nov 5 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Upstate History Museum

See the source image

He was one of the greatest creators of children’s books in the 20th century – though he didn’t like the term “children’s books” and preferred “books that children like.” Author and artist Maurice Sendak upended expectations by depicting menace, anxiety and “wild” behavior in picture books devoured by readers of all ages.

The Upcountry History Museum will serve as the only South Carolina stop on the Wild Things national exhibition tour. Visitors of all ages will experience the fantastical imagination of Maurice Sendak as they explore over 50 pieces of original artwork and step into the pages of his beloved books.

The immersive exhibition celebrates Sendak’s life and work by showcasing his most famous pieces through preliminary sketches, finished artwork, and interactive experiences. All of this is told through the words of Sendak himself, intimately connecting the artist to his art and stories.

Sendak created a visual language that has captivated generations of children. Although he sometimes indulged in lighthearted plots, his picture books often had menacing elements: fanged monsters, baby stealing goblins and young protagonists placed in dangerous situations. Sendak intentionally gave children the opportunity to engage with ethical dilemmas, to feel afraid as well as joyful, and to take part in imaginative play.

During his long career Sendak illustrated over one hundred books, which continue to thrill and fascinate life-long learners all over the world. The fifty works of art in the exhibition will be accompanied by quotes from fellow illustrators, friends, and celebrities, sharing their thoughts on Sendak and the ways in which he inspired them. As comedian Stephen Colbert stated, “His art gave us a fantastical but un-romanticized reminder of what childhood truly felt like.”

Curriculum based lessons, along with “rumpus themed” family and adult programs will coincide with the exhibition and its timeless messages.
