Reclaimed Creations
Nov 30 all-day
NC Arboretum

Reclaimed Creations is a unique sculpture exhibit created by renowned artist Sayaka Ganz. Utilizing reclaimed plastic objects, such as discarded utensils, Ganz creates amazing sculptures that visually appear unified at a distance, but are in fact separated when examined up close. Described as using a “3D impressionistic” style, Ganz’s exhibit includes installations of animals in motion, which are in rich in color and energy, to create an illusion of form.

About the Artist

Born in Yokohama, Japan, Sayaka Ganz grew up living in Japan, Brazil and Hong Kong. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A lecturer and teacher, Ganz’s work has been displayed at various institutions around the globe, including the Hermann Geiger Foundation in Cecina, Italy, the Isle Gallery in Isle of Man, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.

My work is about perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside. When observing my sculptures up close, one might see gaps, holes and items being held on only by small points; step away, however, and the sculptures reveal the harmony created when the objects are aligned to the same general (but not identical) direction. Similarly, it is important to gain perspective by stepping back from current problems and look at the larger picture. Then one can perceive the beauty and patterns that exist.”

THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride
Nov 30 all-day

All Aboard THE POLAR EXPRESS! This memorable journey will take you on an incredible journey! Believe the magic this Holiday season!

Over 88,000 guests rode THE POLAR EXPRESS with the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in 2017 and we hope to see you in 2018! The 1¼ hour round-trip excursion comes to life as the train departs the Bryson City depot for a journey through the quiet wilderness for a special visit at the North Pole. Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, guests on board will enjoy warm cocoa and a treat while listening and reading along with the magical story. Children’s faces show the magic of the season when the train arrives at the North Pole to find Santa Claus waiting. Santa will board THE POLAR EXPRESS, greeting each child and presenting them with a special gift as in the story, their own silver sleigh bell. Christmas carols will be sung as they return back to the Bryson City Depot.

THE POLAR EXPRESS begins November 9, 2018, and operates through December 31, 2018.

MORE INFO

Children of all ages, take heart. Santa was a real person and, unsurprisingly, generous and kind to all. Kick off your holiday season by hearing about the man who became Santa Claus. On Friday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m., Dr. Kris Pratt, Spartanburg Methodist College professor of religion, will give a talk titled “Saint Nicholas in History and Legend.” The event will take place in the Davis Mission Chapel on the SMC campus. It is free and open to the public.

Life wasn’t candy canes and bowls full of jelly for the real St. Nick, said Pratt. Nicholas, who lived over 1700 years ago in what is now Turkey, overcame the sudden deaths of his parents and being arrested during the Diocletian persecution of Christians to become a man revered for his many virtues.

“He was generous with his possessions, once lifting an entire family out of poverty with a secret gift of gold,” Pratt said. “During his life he was a respected leader of the early Christian movement.”

Pratt’s talk, which is appropriate for adults, children and elves, will focus on three stories of Saint Nicholas: the story of the Three Dowries, the story of the Military Officers, and the story of the Three Clerks.

“All of these stories show Nicholas’ concern for the vulnerable in society – the poor, the prisoner, etc. – as well as his generous spirit,” Pratt says. Images of Saint Nicholas will accompany his talk.

“Saint Nicholas in History and Legend” is part of SMC’s Interdisciplinary Series, which features performances, speakers and art experiences that enhance the liberal arts mission of the college. More information about the Interdisciplinary Series may be found at www.smcsc.edu/interdis

Be prepared for a blend of soul, poetry, trap, meditation, creativity, and high vibes! With music, open bar, and amazing folks from across the Carolinas, you should be prepared for an amazing time!

What Are We Celebrating?

I applied to attend NYU’s MFA Writers’ Workshop in Paris less than one month ago. I had no idea what would happen, but I felt strongly to apply, and I did. When asked previously about whether I would apply for an MFA, I had always said no. The truth is, I had several fears:

1. Will I reduce my writing to the expectations of academia, forgetting to speak truth to power?

2. What will happen if I continue to ignore this call I feel to engage more deeply the process of writing?

3. Can I afford this?

4. How can this MFA elevate a transformative voice in the world?

5. Will my family freak out? (None of us has left the country before.)

With a short span of time to submit, I went into meditation, had difficult conversations with myself and loved ones about what I desire, and I reached out to people to submit letters of recommendations on my behalf. They each said yes, and I received notice last week that I have been accepted for admittance!!!

Funds used to apply and enroll were all thanks to my Patreon supporters (Cassandra Byrd, Courtney Leak, ShAy Black, Susan Lea, Charmell Davis Teasley, Vernetta Dekine, Tamara Marie, Creative Agitators, Ian Morris, Max Lit, and Hayle Oswell)! I am also thankful to my forgetting that I had setup a new Paypal account. Hehe! It was like finding an artist’s savings…imagine that?! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT THIS YEAR! It has been beautiful to witness this all unfold without my knowing how!

What Will Funds Be Used For?

Currently, I am the Executive Director of a small nonprofit that works to heal what divides us. I teach college part-time, and I will soon be doing other part-time work. My work reaches wide as a poet and social worker, having great impact. However, these are not highly funded positions. I will be working full-time and completing this MFA full-time. LEHGO!

Your ticket fee, purchase of my book, and/or mixtape will assist me with roundtrip travel to Paris. Your decision to come out and have a good time & celebrate will also help with lodging during the four 10-day periods. TRUST ME, I HAVE DECIDED TO REALLY CELEBRATE.

Throw a party?! I have been accused of seeing the glass half empty when it is indeed half full, and this is too often the case. This is changing. There is growth and so much beauty on its way.I cannot wait until you hear these poems bathed in music LIVE!!!

Can’t make it out? Purchase the book or album at sapientsoul.bandcamp.com & sapientsoul.bandcamp.com/merch
