Lake Tomahawk

The 20th Annual Valentine Run 5K begins at beautiful Lake Tomahawk Park and visits 3 of Black Mountain’s Greenways. The 5K course offers several challenging hills and ample flats. The final 1/2 mile follows the gravel path around the lake and finishes at the Lakeview Center.

Enter as a two person team or go solo. All participants are included in the Overall and Age Group awards. The 5K is a 2019 Asheville Track Club GP event.

Kick off Valentine’s Day with a run with your sweetheart. Husband/Wife teams compete in one of three categories. Not married? Run with your Mom, Dad, friend, or neighbor. Any two people can be a team. Awards go to the top 5K team in the following divisions: Husband/Wife (three categories) , Mother/Daughter, Mother/Son, Father/Son, Father/Daughter, Sister/Sister, Brother/Brother, Sister/Brother, & Open (any couple) – M/F, M/M, & F/F.

Always a favorite the Kids ½ mile Fun Run is one lap around the lake. The path is free of traffic and monitored by race volunteers allowing kids to run freely with or without an adult support crew.

A. Gibert Kennedy: Reading and Signing
Feb 19 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Hub City Writers Project

On February 19th at 7pm, A. Gibert Kennedy will be reading from and signing his new book, A South Carolina Upcountry Saga: The Civil War Letters of Barham Bobo Foster and His Family 1860-1863.

Hope, sacrifice, and restoration: throughout the American Civil War and its aftermath, the Foster family endured all of these in no small measure. Drawing from dozens of public and privately owned letters, A. Gibert Kennedy recounts the story of his great-great-grandfather and his family in A South Carolina Upcountry Saga: The Civil War Letters of Barham Bobo Foster and His Family, 1860-1863.

Barham Bobo Foster was a gentleman planter from the Piedmont who signed the South Carolina Ordinance of Secession and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Third South Carolina Volunteers alongside his two sons. Kennedy’s primary sources are letters written by Foster and his sons, but he also references correspondence involving Foster’s daughters and his wife, Mary Ann.

The letters describe experiences on the battlefields of Virginia and South Carolina, vividly detailing camp life, movements, and battles along with stories of bravery, loss, and sacrifice. The Civil War cost Foster his health, all that he owned, and his two sons, though he was able to rebuild with the help of his wife and three daughters. Supplementing the correspondence with maps, illustrations, and genealogical information, Kennedy shows the full arc of the Foster family’s struggle and endurance in the Civil War era.

Gibert Kennedy earned a B.A. in history from East Carolina University and a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee. He retired from a career in the nuclear industry in 2015. Kennedy has a bookselling business in Aiken, S.C. that specializes in South Carolina and Civil War history. He lives in Aiken, S.C. with his wife, Pam and a feral cat.

Chimney Rock Village RiverWalk Trail Clean Up
Feb 26 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Chimney Rock Village

Our iconic RiverWalk Trail in Chimney Rock Village doesn’t stay this inviting on its own. We have to maintain it regularly with limited financial and human resources.
So, if you love this trail as much as we do, and you can spare an hour or two, grab your gloves, shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows. We’ll meet at the entrance to the RiverWalk Trail in Chimney Rock Village (next to the entrance of Bubba O’Leary’s) this Tuesday, Feb. 26th at 9 am to buff up this beautiful, but fragile recreation spot. We realize short notice, but several things fell together very recently where we’ll be able to use some of the equipment from the Chimney Rock Volunteer Fire Department. So, if you can make it, please consider helping us work on the trail for an hour or two – whatever time you can spare is genuinely appreciated!
