Join us for a seminar by Dr. Brigitte Neary, Distinguished Professor Emerita of Sociology, as we delve into the following questions:

  • What is culture? Is it a design for living, a form of social control, or both?
  • What are the dimensions of culture? (Ideas, which include beliefs and values, norms and material items or artifacts). How and when do we learn these dimensions?
  • Why does culture differ between societies?
  • What are the characteristics of individualistic societies? And conversely, of communitarian societies?
  • What does culture have to do with these differences? What type of society is yours and how so?
  • What is the significance of symbols and language?
  • Could we live without culture in any group, community or society?
  • Are you a conformist or consider yourself a free spirit?

These are among the questions this seminar addresses to provide participants insight into the role of culture in their lives. Believe it or not, culture is instrumental every waking moment. Because culture is so pivotal it is critical to be aware of cultural differences between and, to some extent, within societies in order to be able to navigate the social environment in which one finds oneself.
