Greenville Chautauqua: History Comes Alive: Meet Georgia O’Keeffe
Jun 14 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Headquarters Library Spartanburg

Georgia O’Keeffe was an independent woman who broke the rules and forged her own unique place in the world of arts. Her style is familiar from the bold, miraculous canvases that gave rise to her legend. Her face is familiar for the astonishing Alfred Stieglitz photographs that captured her wisdom and haunting beauty.

Her innovative impressionist images challenged perceptions and constantly evolved. She not only painted the world around her, she created a world where gigantic brilliant flowers and cow skulls; cavernous valleys and haunting skylines; parched deserts and wide skies, and even the artist herself achieve their undisputed domain. Through her vision, they grew large to cover the canvas and expand to become another world.

She not only created art; she created a world.

Houdini performed by Larry Bounds

Harry Houdini, from his birth to his death, led a life of mystery and controversy.

He was a world renowned magician, an escape artist, an author, and an avid collector and historian. He was a pioneering filmmaker and aviator.

He debunked con men and fake mediums who used magician’s tricks to cheat the public and was the frequent subject of their death threats. He trained police officers in improved restraint techniques and wrote a guide for surviving mine collapses.

Nearly a hundred years since his untimely death, Ehrich Weiss, as Houdini, remains the most famous magician in history.

Over the years he has presented thousands of public, private, and corporate magic shows.

Free Chautauqua History Comes Alive Festival: Pauli Murray Performed by Becky Stone
Jun 15 @ 11:30 am – 1:00 pm
Phillis Wheatley Center

Pauli Murray helped transform the law of the land. Registration required.

She challenged “Jim Crow.” The overturning of Plessy v. Ferguson and the success of Brown v. Board of Education was in great part based on her legal tactic of challenging “separate” instead of “equal” and Pauli’s 746 page “States’ Laws on Race and Color.”

She challenged “Jane Crow” (a term she coined.) Murray provided the argument Ruth Bader Ginsburg used to persuade the Supreme Court that the 14th Amendment protects not only blacks but also women – and potentially other minorities – from discrimination.

A mixed-race orphan, Pauli grew up in segregated Depression Era North Carolina. UNC Graduate School rejected because of her race. Harvard Graduate School rejected her because of her sex. In spite of it all, Pauli graduated first in her class at Howard Law School. At Yale University where she earned her doctorate of law, her name now graces one of the university’s new colleges.

Dwight Eisenhower performed by Doug Mishler

The Eisenhower presidency led the nation through both the darkest years of the Cold War as well as the Red Scare fanaticism of Joseph McCarthy, the rapidly escalating Civil Rights Movement and the burgeoning military industrial complex.

But before Eisenhower was a President, he was a General – not just any General but the Supreme Commander of the polyglot Allied forces.

And before World War II could end, he’d have bring together the land, air and sea forces of the coordinated efforts of 12 nations in what became known as the largest invasion force in human history. He’d have to maintain control of national egos, his own temper, supply chains and even the weather.

Failure was not an option.

Opening music: Swing a la King (J. Michael)  J. Michael King

Rain Plan: In the case of inclement weather, the show will be shown virtually. A link to view the show at the original time and date publicized AND participate in Q/A, will be posted on the homepage of this website.

About Doug Mishler, Ph.D.

Since 1993 Doug has been nationally recognized for bringing “history to life.” Doug has presented figures from Nikita Khrushchev to Theodore Roosevelt, to Ernie Pyle, and P. T. Barnum. He has made over 800 first person presentations of over 30 historical figures, including Stonewall Jackson, Henry Ford, Pablo Picasso, and now Dwight D Eisenhower, Nikola Tesla, and Gene Roddenberry.

The voices in his head keep him busy, but also in the last four years he has been the Founder & Managing Artistic Director of Restless Artists’ Theatre. When not in the theatre or doing his characters, Mishler has taught American Cultural history for over 20 years. Like his idol Teddy Roosevelt, Doug believes there is still plenty of time to grow up and get a “real job”—but later!

Discussion about Robert Kennedy with Jeremy Meier

During the June Festival at 9am (Sat June 11 – Mon June 13 – Tue June 14 – Thu June 16 – Fri June 17) we gather together to pick the brains of the historical performers. No costumes, no script, just a chance to have some personal time and dialog with the performers – and get to know them and what they think about their characters.

Each morning features a different performer/historical figure. Often the other performers and Chautauqua staff join in the fun. And if you come to multiple Discussions, you begin to see how the 2022 “Challenge: Accepted!”  historical figures relate to each other.

Come view the brand new modern Senior Action Headquarters. Plenty of free parking.

The Morning Discussion Series is collaboration with Senior Action which provides fun, arts, lifelong learning, activities, meals, transportation and so much more for over 5000 seniors in Greater Greenville. And it’s a chance to explore their brand new state-of-the-art home base just opened to the public last Spring.

The 26th Annual Upstate Shakespeare Festival: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Jun 16 @ 7:00 pm
Falls Park

The 26th Annual Upstate Shakespeare Festival will feature MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING from May 26th to June 26th, 2022.  OTHELLO will soon follow premiering on July 14th until July 31st, 2022.

While many people might associate Shakespeare with high school English class, his works are true classics that help us understand different cultures, different people, and different times. In fact, it’s been said that Shakespeare was ‘not of an age, but for all time.’ Now, more than 400 years after his death, that statement still rings true.

Knowing that many people don’t seek out Shakespearean plays, we sought to bring Shakespeare to the people in a fun, educational, free, and accessible way. The Warehouse Theatre put on our first ever Upstate Shakespeare Festival back in 1995. Since then, it has truly become a Greenville Tradition.

The Upstate Shakespeare Festival takes place each summer. Usually one show runs from May to June and another from June to July. Shows begin at 7:00pm (arrive early to get a spot!) and run Thursday through Sunday each week during the run of shows.

Robert F. Kennedy performed by Jeremy Meier

When one hears the name Kennedy, most think of JFK or maybe even Jackie. But it was serious young Bobby Kennedy who faced off with Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters during the Rackets Committee hearings of the late fifties and who during the Cuban Missile Crisis possessed a dissenting voice to which the President was open to listen.

When we think of the 60’s, we hear his brother, JFK’s challenge: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”

RFK took up that gauntlet. He was 36 when he became the US Attorney General. At 40 he was elected US Senator and soon started his Presidential campaign. At 42 he was assassinated. What might have been had he finished the race?

“For of those to whom much is given much is required.”
