FLAT ROCK PLAYHOUSE
In 1937, a group of struggling performers, led by Robroy Farquhar, organized themselves as the Vagabond Players. The Vagabonds worked in a variety of places over the course of three years, and in 1940 found themselves in the Blue Ridge region of Western North Carolina. The local and tourist community welcomed them with open arms when they presented their first summer season of plays in a 150-year-old grist mill they converted into The Old Mill Playhouse at Highland Lake. So successful was that summer, they returned in 1941. After WWII, the Vagabond Players reorganized came back to the region and opened a playhouse in nearby Lake Summit. The Lake Summit Playhouse thrived during the post-war years and soon the Vagabond Players were looking for a larger and permanent home. In 1952, the troupe of performers, and a newly formed board of directors made an offer to buy an 8-acre lot in the Village of Flat Rock. This new home made the Vagabonds “locals” and a rented big top gave birth to Flat Rock Playhouse. As the beautiful Western Carolina region continued to grow, so did the Playhouse and in 1961, by Act of the North Carolina General Assembly, Flat Rock Playhouse was officially designated The State Theatre of North Carolina. What began as a few weeks of summer performances in 1940 is now a nine-month season of plays including Broadway musicals, comedy, drama, and theatre for young audiences. The Playhouse’s dual mission of producing the performing arts and providing education in the performing arts includes a professional series; a summer and fall college apprentice and intern program; and Studio 52, year-round classes and workshops in theatre and film for students from kindergarten through adults. Flat Rock Playhouse now hosts over 98,000 patrons annually and is a significant contributor to the local economy and the Arts in North Carolina.

The Program
Orchestral performance forms the heart of the Brevard Music Center. Students who play orchestral instruments may enroll in the Orchestral Studies program for an intensive summer training experience.
All students in the High School Orchestral Studies program:
- rehearse daily and perform extensively in various ensembles
- receive weekly private lessons
- participate in formal chamber music study coached by BMC’s artist faculty
- may perform in solo and chamber concerts
- may participate in masterclasses
- may attend open rehearsals with world-renowned concert soloists
- may compete in the Jan and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition
- may attend other orchestra, chamber, solo, and opera performances
The High School Division is open to students who are at least 14 by the start date of their program and have not yet completed one year as a full-time college student. The program is a six-and-a-half week session, with numerous concerts presented by the High School participants during that time. Shorter sessions are not available in this program. Information about our on-campus safety procedures will be updated regularly on our FAQ page.
High School Strings
BMC High School Division string students perform in the Brevard Concert Orchestra, under BMC’s Artistic Director Keith Lockhart, and BMC’s Resident Conductor Ken Lam. The BCO maintains a regular schedule of sectional rehearsals in addition to the daily rehearsal of the full ensemble.
Additional features of BMC’s High School string program include technique and orchestral repertoire classes, string quartet seminars and coachings, and mock auditions / audition preparation classes.
Concertmaster Studio
BMC’s Concertmaster Studio provides a select group of violin students with the opportunity to study with some of the world’s greatest concertmasters. Students in the Concertmaster Studio will receive weekly private lessons, orchestral leadership training, and will participate in studio classes and masterclasses. Acceptance into the Concertmaster Studio is by audition. Additional audition excerpts are required – see the “Audition Requirements” section below for a list. (Selection into the Concertmaster Studio does not guarantee a principal seat in orchestra.)
In 2022, guest concertmasters include Nikki Chooi (Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra), Dennis Kim (Pacific Symphony), Charles Mutter (BBC Concert Orchestra), and Yuan-Qing Yu (Chicago Symphony Orchestra).
High School Woodwinds / Brass / Percussion
Students in the High School Division perform in the Brevard Concert Orchestra, under BMC’s Artistic Director Keith Lockhart, and BMC’s Resident Conductor Ken Lam. The BCO maintains a regular schedule of sectional rehearsals in addition to the daily rehearsal of the full ensemble.
Woodwind, brass, and percussion students also participate in the Brevard Symphonic Winds under the baton of Kraig Alan Williams. The BSW commences its season with the traditional Patriotic Pops concert on July 4, always one of the Music Center’s most popular events. The Symphonic Winds feature performances of advanced repertoire not typically available to high school ensembles.
Additional features of BMC’s High School program include technique and orchestral repertoire classes, auxiliary instrument classes, and mock auditions / audition preparation classes. Woodwind students may also participate in reed-making seminars. Additional features of BMC’s High School Brass / Percussion program include participation in “Just Brass,” a concert that brings together all BMC brass players on campus, and participation in “Supersonic,” the annual percussion concert that includes all BMC percussion faculty and students.
Note: Saxophonists apply directly to the Saxophone Institute.
Tuition and Payment Schedule
The tuition for the six-and-a-half week High School Orchestral Institute is $7850. This includes all instruction, housing, meals, and the opportunity to attend on-campus concerts and other events. Each participant is responsible for travel to and from Brevard.
A non-refundable enrollment fee of $800 is due within 2 weeks of acceptance and applies toward the cost of tuition. The remaining tuition balance is due by May 15.
Refunds
All payments, except the $65 application fee and $800 enrollment fee, will be fully refunded if the Center receives notice of cancellation due to serious illness before May 15. Written verification from an M.D. is required before a refund can be made. No reduction in fees can be made for late arrival or early departure. No refunds will be made after May 15.
Scholarships
Brevard Music Center offers scholarship support according to a student’s audition and demonstrated financial need, and program need. In recent years, Brevard has provided scholarship support to more than 70% of its students. Scholarship support includes merit, need-based, and the BMC Opportunity Scholarship open to students of African-American and Latinx descent.

Audition Requirements
Admission to the Brevard Music Center is determined by audition.
Accompaniment is optional. Total audition length should not exceed 12 minutes.
Audio or video recordings are accepted for all instruments except percussion (must submit a video audition). Upload audio recordings or link(s) to YouTube video auditions directly into your application. Submissions do not have to be one continuous take; once you add one selection, the option to add another will appear.

Option 1: Classic Rock for acoustic guitar
Join beloved Polk County musician Woody Cowan and learn YOUR favorite tunes. In this setting, the students pick the songs, and Woody leads the teaching. This friendly class is full of peer-to-peer encouragement and collaboration. Artists covered included Janis Joplin, Neil Young, Old Crow Medicine Show, & Grateful Dead. Whether you know a lot of chords or just a couple, this class will move you forward musically while taking you back through the best era of radio-played folk music.
Option 2: Beginner/Intermediate Folk Jam
World-class musician Gaye Johnson leads this class, gently raising your comfort level to play freely in a group setting. Rooted in traditional folk music, aspiring mandolin, and guitar students will join together to gain more comfort and self-assurance in a group setting, while also diving into rhythm techniques and ornamentations.
Option 3: Intermediate/ advanced band
Bob and Amy Buckingham guide adults on all instruments (guitar, clawhammer banjo, fiddle, mandolin, ukulele, & bass). Several songs are picked by the group at the start of the semester, and over the 10 week semester, the musicality and “setlist” grow exponentially. Adults love this format for
guided jamming.

Wednesday
4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
All beginning students receive 45 minutes of group instruction and 45 minutes of singing/storytelling.
Group song & story: Gaye Johnson (known for having the sweetest voice in the region) gives students the strong foundation they need for learning an instrument. To learn music most effectively, students must know the songs before they play them on an instrument – then the learning becomes intuitive. This fun class equips students with the classic songs and stories of the region and helps launch their musical abilities.

Option 1: Beginning ukulele, ages 6-8
Option 2: Instrument Survey, ages 8-14
Continuing from last semester, this instrument survey class will focus on clawhammer banjo, plus one additional instrument to be chosen by the students.

Option 4: Beginner mandolin ages 8-14
Option 5: Beginner fiddle ages 8-14

PacJAM’s house band gets rigorous coaching this semester from Emily Wait and special guest coaches. Clover Pickers will spend 5 weeks of the semester practicing their teaching skills from 4-4:45 weekly, and 5 weeks working on choosing and arranging songs for Clover Picker performance. Band rehearsal and coaching last from 4:45-6 for all 10 weeks. Clover Pickers band is by invitation and the commitment requires extra rehearsals as determined by the group.
Three decades after Travis Tritt launched his music career, the Southern rock-influenced artist continues to sell-out shows and stay true and relevant to country music fans across the globe. The highly abbreviated Tritt timeline started when the young Marietta, Georgia native incorporated his lifelong influences of Southern rock, blues, and gospel into his country during a honky-tonk apprenticeship that led him to Warner Bros. in 1989.
Tritt’s albums, seven of which are certified platinum or higher, led him to amass more than 30 million in career album sales, two GRAMMY Awards, four CMA Awards, an invitation to become a member of the world’s famous Grand Ole Opry and a devoted fan base that has filled venues coast-to-coast. Travis Tritt is dubbed one of “The Class of ’89,” which included Country music superstars Garth Brooks, Clint Black and Alan Jackson; all of whom dominated the charts in the early ’90s. Among his eleven studio albums and numerous charted singles are nineteen Top 10 hits, including “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde,” “Here’s A Quarter” and “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive.” Tritt’s talents, however, are not limited to music as he has also appeared in numerous feature films and TV shows throughout his extraordinary career. Tritt is currently on tour performing solo acoustic and full band shows across the country.
World-renown Celtic musical artist Jamie Laval presents a behind-the-scenes view of how he creates music. Months of research, creative inspiration, skilled application of technological tools and diligent practicing go into each new song before it is ready to be shared with the public. Learn about the process from inception to manifestation in this three-part lecture/performance series.
TFAC will follow CDC and Polk County COVID recommendations. Participants will have space to social distance and appropriate face masks are strongly recommended. The program will also be available via Zoom.

The MADDDARTIST
Roderice Cardell, who died in January 2021 at the age of 33, left behind him a legacy through his music, his art and, most importantly, his love of his community and his commitment to making it a better place.
Nearly 100 of Cardell’s paintings – many never before seen by the public – will be displayed in “The MADDDARTIST: Roderice Cardell” exhibition Jan. 4, 2022, through Feb. 26, 2022, in the Solomon Gallery of the Artists Collective | Spartanburg. During the Feb. 17 Spartanburg ArtWalk, members of Cardell’s band will perform from 8 to 10 p.m. for visitors to the gallery.
Cardell’s works – neo-expressionist abstract paintings done on canvas and wood – will be offered for sale, with the proceeds going to Cardell’s family foundation to help underprivileged children in the Upstate.

J. S. Bach’s Mass in B-Minor
The 25 professional voices of the Herring Chamber Ensemble, joined by our professional chamber orchestra, perform the monument Bach “B-Minor Mass.” Bach’s greatest work, assembled near the end of his life, and never heard by Bach himself, has been the benchmark for choral-orchestral music since 1750. This intimate performance at Westminster Presbyterian Church will be a memorable and lasting experience for all.
The Petrie School of Music and Converse School of the Arts have partnered with the Ciclops Cyderi & Brewery to provide a performance series at the brewery! This series is a free and family-friendly way to offer high-quality music in a relaxed atmosphere.
Featured musicians will perform in a range of genres and styles including opera, chamber music, musical theatre, pop, new music, folk, and more.
