Dr. Tish Oney, international recording artist, arranger, composer and Artistic Director of several productions, currently tours as a symphony pops soloist, big band soloist, jazz vocalist, light lyric soprano, and artist-in-residence. Oney presents symphony shows and big band shows written by Grammy-winning arrangers Chris Walden and Bill Cunliffe as well as Juno-winner, Jason Goldman, and Joe Riposo. An avid arranger and composer in her own right, Oney has arranged several hundred pieces for jazz combo including hits from the Great American Songbook as well as her originals. A talented and esteemed choral conductor, she is called upon to work with professional, university and community choirs, and with vocal jazz ensembles as a guest conductor or artist-in-residence.
Tish is currently producing her fifth major recording project–this time with John Chiodini (guitar), Chuck Berghofer (bass) and Ray Brinker (drums). This jazz album, The Best Part, serves as a compilation of new original songs by contemporary jazz composers, including three never-before-heard songs with lyrics by jazz diva Peggy Lee. This album is due to be released in the winter of 2019. Oney’s 2015 recording of original vocal/guitar duets titled Songs From the Heart, was honored by the Recording Academy on the 2016 first-round Grammy ballot in three categories, including “Song of the Year”. Oney’s previous albums, Sweet Youth, Dear Peg, and Forever Friend, also achieved international airplay, Grammy consideration, and critical acclaim.
Oney has performed and/or recorded with hundreds of renowned jazz artists and has headlined at thousands of live performances worldwide. She was featured as a big band/symphony soloist in the PBS-broadcast concert recorded at Galen Center in Los Angeles: “We Love Ella! A Tribute to the First Lady of Song,” along with Natalie Cole, Nancy Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Wynonna, Patti Austin, and Take 6, emceed by Quincy Jones and produced by Phil Ramone, who personally congratulated her after the concert saying: “The future of this music is in very good hands…” She has performed as soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, The Williamsburg Symphony, The Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphoria, several U.S. Army Bands and other outstanding ensembles. She has headlined at Earshot Jazz Festival and Kirkland Performance Center (Kirkland, WA), Sam’s Town Casino (Las Vegas, NV), Syracuse Jazzfest (Syracuse, NY), The Peace Center (Greenville, SC), Wilson Center for the Arts (Brookfield, WI), Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts (Schaumburg, IL), The Glen Ridge Performing Arts Center (Sarasota, FL), Thousand Oaks Civic Arts (Thousand Oaks, CA), Zimmerli Amphitheatre (5000 attending, Spartanburg, SC), the Crouse-Hinds Concert Hall (2200 attending, Syracuse, NY) and the Hawai’i Convention Center (4000 attending, Honolulu, HI), among other large venues. She has appeared as headlining performer at many jazz hotspots including The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles, The Jazz Corner on Hilton Head Island, Feinstein’s at Loews Regency and the off-Broadway theatre, The Triad, in New York. An experienced film, stage, and television actress, Oney imbues her live performances with dramatic power and warmth.
Dr. Oney was honored in 2016 to win the Jazz Artist/Group of the Year award from the South Carolina Music Awards, and in 2015 her high school honored her as one of the inaugural five ‘Graduates of Distinction.’ She was lauded in the book The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide authored by jazz critic Scott Yanow. She was also honored to be named a USC Winter Scholar for her development of two touring symphony shows, and was named a Robert G. Boehmler Visiting Artist at Ithaca College School of Music. A recipient of The Diane Warren Award, Dr. Oney earned two initiations (by faculty at both IC and USC) into national music honor society Pi Kappa Lambda for her musical excellence. Dr. Oney earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree with honors from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, and a Master of Music degree with honors in Voice Performance from Ithaca College.
In addition to her full performing and recording career, Dr. Oney previously maintained a dual career as a professor of music at several major universities and colleges, serving most recently as Coordinator of Music, Director of Jazz Studies and Commercial Music, Director of Voice Studies and Director of Choral Activities. Several of her former voice students have gone on to major careers on Broadway, as well as in opera, jazz and commercial music. Considered an expert in voice and choral music across many genres, Dr. Oney authors peer-reviewed books and articles, and travels widely to perform, record, conduct, and teach jazz, classical, music theatre and commercial styles. She teaches lessons in voice and piano at her home studio in Greenville, SC, as well as Skype voice lessons for students throughout the United States. A prolific jazz journalist and contributing author to The Journal of Singing, Oney writes a quarterly column titled “Anatomy of a Standard,” for the online jazz magazine, All About Jazz. Her diverse artistic talents combine to form an outstanding performing artist with exceptional technique, improvisational skill, and expertise.

A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.
“One of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history,” says The Washington Post. The New York Times calls DEAR EVAN HANSEN “a gut-punching, breathtaking knockout of a musical” and NBC News says that the musical is “an inspiring anthem resonating on Broadway and beyond.”
DEAR EVAN HANSEN features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy®, Tony® and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).

Based on multiple whimsical fairytales all intertwined, this Tony Award winning musical explores what happens after happily ever after. As the result of the curse of a once beautiful witch, a baker and his wife are childless. Three days before the rise of a blue moon, they venture into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the spell and restore the witch’s beauty: a milk white cow, hair as yellow as corn, a blood red cape, and a slipper of gold. During their journey, they meet Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack, each one on a quest to fulfill a wish.

Calling All Artists…
Here’s your chance to step out of the box and present your most creative, most interesting, most out-there art for the world to see. The first ever “Spartanburg Fringe Festival” will be June 1-29 at West Main Artists Co-op. It will be a month of unusual and unique performances, the experimental, the quirky, the not-average. Dance, theatre, music, film, comedy, spoken word, readings, solos, groups, short and long works, the undefinable. There’s even a little room for some out-of-the-ordinary visual art. This is a work in progress, so talk to us. Let us know what you want to perform or exhibit. But you must apply by April 15. All it takes is a quick email to Sandy Staggs. See details online at SpartanburgFringeFestival.com.
