Again, Then Again Exhibit
Aug 24 @ 12:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Apr. 23 – Sept. 12

Clemson Curates – Clemson University Creative Inquiry Project

Sikes Hall Visual Arts Showcase

Curator’s discussion and closing reception – Sept. 12, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Clemson Curates Creative Inquiry project administered through the Lee Gallery at Clemson University is pleased to announce the opening of the Again, Then Again exhibition April 23 – September 12, 2018. The exhibit showcases recent creative research by Clemson Visual Arts alumni and current BFA and MFA students, examining the human condition through a range of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography. Valerie Zimany, Interim Chair of the Department of Art, describes the exhibition as “evidence of the excellence in experiential learning provided by the Clemson Curates Creative Inquiry program, where students attain valuable professional skills in exhibition preparation and development, as well as foster the critical thinking required for curatorial practice.”

Many of the works included in the exhibition are the newest and hottest pieces being created by current MFA and BFA students, as well as Clemson Visual Arts alumni. Works in the exhibition explore the echoes of self in relation to others, self defined through technology, self manifested through objects, and self found in the places we inhabit. Co-Curator Peden Wright states “each of the works in the exhibit point in some way to the intricate connectivity of our lives and our individual responses to our surrounding environments”. Participating artists include: Master of Fine Arts students Dustin Massey, Annamarie Williams, and Caren Stansell, as well as Bachelor of Fine Arts students Hannah Gardner, Geneva Hutchinson, Sydney Smith, Zoë Rogers, and Anna Sullivan. Alumni include Amber Eckersley, MFA ’17, and Rachel Rinker, BFA ’16.

The exhibit runs April 23,–September 12 with a closing reception planned for Wednesday, September 12, 3:30-4:30pm. Sikes Hall hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and is located on the Clemson Campus. The exhibit, curator’s discussion and reception are free and open to the public. Again, Then Again is supported by Clemson University Creative Inquiry program and Lee Gallery . For more information about the exhibit contact the exhibitions co-curator, Peden Wright at [email protected] or Lee Gallery Director, Denise Woodward-Detrich at [email protected]

Ink Travels Art Exhibit
Aug 24 @ 12:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Jan. 29 – Sept. 10

CAAH Dean’s Gallery

M-F, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

“Ink travels” refers to the constant challenge of keeping an active print shop clean. In the context of this exhibition, the term also refers to the wide-reaching influence of Professor Sydney A. Cross’s teaching and mentoring.

Similar to how “ink travels,” this exhibition showcases Cross’s legacy as an educator and illustrates the positive impact she has had on artists across the nation. The exhibition is a thoughtful tribute to the quality of Cross’s teaching and a reflection on the Clemson Family in the Visual Arts.

Emerge Family Therapy Center & Teaching Clinic

Child-centered play therapy is one way to promote the resilience of children who have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma.

Participants will have opportunities to observe and practice skills, such as responding to feelings, tracking, esteem building, returning responsibility to the child, and setting limits.

The format will include a combination of presentation, demonstration, and opportunity for participants to try skills. The target audience and area of application will be counselors and social workers working with children who are 10 years or younger.

The Piedmont Farmer: The Journals of David Golightly Harris
Aug 24 @ 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
Chapman Cultural Center

The 2018 Lunch & Learn Series welcomes Dr. Phil Racine as he shares the journals of David Golightly Harris are a unique daily record of a fifteen-year span in the life of a Piedmont South Carolina farm family that owned ten slaves and cultivated one hundred acres. Documents from small slaveholders are few, making these journals an invaluable source of information about the agricultural routines of a small antebellum farm as well as a revealing commentary on regional and national affairs, slavery, education, religion, family relationships, and community life.
An especially compelling feature of this book is its inclusion of writings by Harris’s wife, Emily, who took over the journal when he went to war for the Confederacy in 1862. Recounting the trials of managing the farm and raising seven children in her husband’s absence, Emily’s words offer poignant insights into the daily struggles of those who tended the home front during the Civil War.

Grovewood Village is housed in the historic weaving and woodworking complex of Biltmore Industries, a noteworthy enterprise in the history of American Craft and textiles, founded by Edith Vanderbilt and two inspired teachers, Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale. At the height of its success in the late 1920s, Biltmore Industries had a total of 40 looms in steady operation, producing bolts of some of the finest handwoven wool fabric in the country. Orders were shipped as far as China and Uruguay, and customers included the likes of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Helen Keller, and several U.S. presidents and first ladies.

Learn the story of Biltmore Industries on a guided history tour, offered Wednesday – Saturday at 1pm during April – November.  The tour includes a visit to our historic Dye House (usually closed to the public), where you’ll peek into the past and view the original looms, carding machines, spinning mule and dye vats used to make the famed Biltmore Handwoven Homespun.
