The Eisenhower presidency led the nation through both the darkest years of the Cold War as well as the Red Scare fanaticism of Joseph McCarthy, the rapidly escalating Civil Rights Movement and the burgeoning military industrial complex.

But before Eisenhower was a President, he was a General – not just any General but the Supreme Commander of the polyglot Allied forces.

And before World War II could end, he’d have bring together the land, air and sea forces of the coordinated efforts of 12 nations in what became known as the largest invasion force in human history. He’d have to maintain control of national egos, his own temper, supply chains and even the weather.

Failure was not an option.

Discussion about Houdini with Larry Bounds

During the June Festival at 9am (Sat June 11 – Mon June 13 – Tue June 14 – Thu June 16 – Fri June 17) we gather together to pick the brains of the historical performers. No costumes, no script, just a chance to have some personal time and dialog with the performers – and get to know them and what they think about their characters.

Each morning features a different performer/historical figure. Often the other performers and Chautauqua staff join in the fun. And if you come to multiple Discussions, you begin to see how the 2022 “Challenge: Accepted!”  historical figures relate to each other.

The Morning Discussion Series is collaboration with Senior Action which provides fun, arts, lifelong learning, activities, meals, transportation and so much more for over 5000 seniors in Greater Greenville. When one hears the name Kennedy, most think of JFK or maybe even Jackie. But it was serious young Bobby Kennedy who faced off with Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters during the Rackets Committee hearings of the late fifties and who during the Cuban Missile Crisis possessed a dissenting voice to which the President was open to listen.

When we think of the 60’s, we hear his brother, JFK’s challenge: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”

RFK took up that gauntlet. He was 36 when he became the US Attorney General. At 40 he was elected US Senator and soon started his Presidential campaign. At 42 he was assassinated. What might have been had he finished the race?

“For of those to whom much is given much is required.”
