Valentine Wolfe: “…an eerie, pitch-black hybrid of gothic rock, heavy metal and classical music”
-Vincent Harris, Greenville Journal.
Venture into the depths of darkness with Valentine Wolfe, where seances, gothic literature, and macabre history intertwine to create a haunting symphony of sound. Led by the ethereal and haunting vocals of Sarah Black and the brooding melancholy of Braxton Ballew’s solo double bass, Valentine Wolfe channels their love of Paradise Lost, Evanescence, and Mozart into their own music of mystery and imagination.
Valentine Wolfe’s insatiable curiosity has led them to explore diverse musical realms, including collaborations with theatrical and film productions. Notably, they’ve breathed new life into silent horror classics such as Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and The Phantom of the Opera, enchanting audiences with live scores at prestigious events like Dragon*Con.
In 2022, they provided the soundtracks for Triggered, a series of short films illuminating the journeys of women suffering from PTSD.
Valentine Wolfe unveiled All My Nights Were Trances in 2023, an exploration of cinematic dark ambient soundscapes. Supported by a grant from Greenville SC’s Metropolitan Arts Council, this immersive experience continues the band’s tradition of crafting works equally suited for concerts and literary salons, following in the footsteps of acclaimed releases like Only Gossamer My Gown (2020), a captivating tribute to the macabre poetry of Emily Dickinson, The Haunting of Mary Shelley (2018), a 200th anniversary celebration of Frankenstein and its author, and The Elegiac Repose (2017), an exploration of death positivity and grief.
POP EVIL first rose to international prominence with debut album Lipstick on the Mirror, featuring RIAA Certified Gold Single “100 in a 55”. After Kakaty famously tore up the band’s major label contract onstage, POP EVIL signed with MNRK Heavy (formerly eOne Music). 2011’s War of Angels debuted in the Top 10 of the Rock Albums charts and produced three Top 10 singles. The band’s 2013 album Onyx put them in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 for the first time and boasted three consecutive No.1 rock songs, two RIAA Gold Singles, and one Platinum Single “Torn to Pieces”. POP EVIL’s next release, Up, was the No.1 Independent Album in America and made it to #25 on the Billboard 200. It featured several Top 5 rock songs and a chart-topper with “Footsteps”, which also went Gold. POP EVIL’s 2018 self-titled set included the No.1 hit and newly certified Gold single “Waking Lions” and two other Top 10 hits. 2020’s Versatile, meanwhile, scored two No.1 rock songs: “Breathe Again” and “Survivor”. In 2023, the band released its seventh studio album Skeletons, which spawned their eighth and ninth No. 1 singles: “Eye of the Storm” and “Skeletons”.
The Tesla Quartet is known the world over for their “superb capacity to find the inner heart of everything they play, regardless of era, style, or technical demand” (The International Review of Music). From cutting-edge contemporary works to established masterpieces, the Tesla Quartet’s emotive and thoughtful interpretations capture the essence of music and leave their audiences moved and rejuvenated. This program, which the group calls Musica Universalis, explores music inspired by the grandeur and glory of outer space, with everything from Beethoven contemplating heavens to “Moonshot,” a new piece inspired by the Apollo 11 mission.

Hodie by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams tells the Christmas story with enlightening poetry interspersed throughout. Brahms’ beautiful “Nanie” (Song of Lamentation) sets a poem by Friedrich von Shiller lamenting “even the beautiful must die,” but affirming the result of a life well-lived that the “beauty” of the departed will live on. J. S. Bach ended his ultimate masterwork, MASS IN B-MINOR, with a profound setting of “Dona nobis pacem” (Give us peace). In our world today, this affirming prayer is needed more than ever. Closing the program is “St. Patrick’s Hymn” a work commissioned by the Chorale from composer Dan Forrest. The text is both a prayer an affirmation that God will “pilot us” through difficult times; He will give us wisdom and protect and direct us and “always be ours this day and forevermore.”
