On Saturday, February 10th, your buddies at FR8yard are teaming up with “Adam Knight’s Buried Alive: The Phinest Phish Tribute” and 2024 Dancing with the Spartanburg Star’s Contestant Jeff Goshorn to raise some major dough for the Cancer Association of Spartanburg & Cherokee Counties. How are we doing this??? We’re having a good ol’ fashioned Fish Fry (or Phish Phry, depending on who you ask). We’ll be dining on traditional Fried Fish Plates w/all the fixins (Phixins?) whilst listening to the band Rolling Stone Magazine called “The Most Important Band of the 90s” and who recently celebrated their 40th anniversary playing together. We’ll be showing live Phish on the Jumbotron and then “Adam Knight’s Buried Alive” will take the stage at 2pm.

“VIP Upper Deck TIX” include open bar, fried fish, raw bar, passed apps and awesome entertainment ($150)

“Ground-Level Tix” include Crispy Fish Fry Meal & one (1) adult beverage ticket ($40)

Visitors of all ages and abilities can enjoy their hiking experience at the Arboretum as trail options include easy, moderate, and difficult challenge levels. All trails are dog-friendly and visitors are asked to adhere to the proper waste disposing procedures for pets.

MEAL PACKAGING

We need volunteers to pack nearly 1,500 meals every Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until approximately 10:00 a.m. The food is prepared by our kitchen staff and set-up in an assembly line for packaging.

PET FOOD PACKAGING

Meals on Wheels also strives to help the pets of the homebound in Greenville. We need volunteers to package dog and cat food for monthly distribution and to organize pet food drives.

Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday from 10:30 until 12 pm to greet in-coming volunteers, hand out route sheets and answer questions.

*Have the ability to respond to neighbors in a supportive and empathic manner.

*Be able to respect the confidential nature of the paperwork involved.

If so, this may be your calling. Our VITA Greeters welcome the neighbors upon their arrival. During check-in, you will make sure they have the needed and completed documents for our tax preparers. You do NOT need to have any knowledge of taxes to participate in this activity.

We offer this assistance from the end of January to mid April. The weekly shifts are Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm to 8pm and Saturday from 8:30am to 1:30pm. We are asking that volunteers can do at least one shift most weeks.

Racial Justice Workshop

The YWCA Racial Justice Workshop is open to our entire YWCA Asheville community – including our staff, volunteers, board, donors, program participants, Fitness Center and community members. This 90-minute workshop will take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 11:30 am and will be facilitated by Gerry Leonard, Racial Justice & Outreach Specialist and Lexus Walker, Tzedek Social Justice Fellow.

 

Oyster Roast Annual at St. Christopher’s

Come and see for yourself is the invitation extended by St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. Our Annual Oyster Roast is February 13 – Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, and it’s also the day before Valentine’s Day! Our oyster roast is just the place to experience joyful fellowship while you shuck and slurp deliciousness! This family-friendly event helps the ministries of St. Christopher’s to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in the world. Come and see for yourself!

What’s on the Menu:

Steamed Oysters
Boiled Shrimp
Clam Chowder
Hotdog plate (separate ticket for kids 12 years and under $5).
Baked Beans

Iced Tea and Water
Additional Need To Knows:

Doors Open 5:45: Ask us about private tables for 8 and early access. Only those with tickets for the Oyster Roast and Hotdog plates are to be in the event space in the Gym.
Roast Ends at 8 pm: The cleaning crew has work in the morning so please depart by 8:30pm
Childcare is FREE: Activities for all kids up to age 12 (pre-registration required). Add a hotdog plate for $5 (Children either are to be under the direct supervision of their parent or adult or they must be preregistered for our free child care.)
Evening also includes: Drawing with valuable prizes and a wine cork pull. Pre-purchase tickets online or buy the night-of
BYOOK: bring your own oyster knife. A limited quantity of knives will be sold at the roast for $5 each, or better yet, plan ahead and add one on to your ticket purchase
BYOB: Beer, wine, or spirits, the choice is yours, but you’ve got to bring it, cups and ice with you; you are responsible for supervising your alcoholic beverages

Guitarist Jorge Garcia’s intense passion for his instrument is immediately visible and equally audible through his soulful original compositions. Impeccable, melodic solos and supportive, rhythmic guitar work are Garcia’s trademarks and are always a joy to experience. Jorge Garcia has performed with great talent the likes of: Tony Bennett, Richie Cole, Patti Page, Andrea Bocelli, Othelo Molineaux, Candido Camero, Cecile Mclorin Salvant, Ed Calle, Bryan Lynch, Ignacio Berroa and Joel Grey to name a few.

Jorge has also performed with pop artists such as Enrique Iglesias, Trini Lopez, The Drifters, The Flamingo’s with Terry Johnson, Bobby Riddell, and many more. Garcia has recorded with Athenas Jazz Art, Carlos Oliva, Pete Minger, Richie Cole; his 2005 release The Sound of Strings with Federico Britos and his recent recording “The Color of Notes” with Israel “Cachao” Lopez, actor Andy Garcia, and the great Vibraphones Chuck Redd. Jorge is in the recording “Voyage” featuring Federico Britos released in April 2010 with Eddie Gomez, Mitchell Camilo, Ignacio Berroa and Giovani Hidalgo. He is on the new CD released in April 2015, Federico Britos Presents The Hot Club Of The Americas with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Cecile Mclorin Salvant, Hendrik Meurkens, Atonio Adolfo.

Nicky Orta

Nicky Orta is a highly sought-after electric bassist from the South Florida area. His solid playing and musical versatility has landed him world tours, gigs, and recording sessions with renowned artists such as Julio Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Engelbert Humperdinck, Cristian Castro, Arturo Sandoval, and Sammy Figueroa (with whom Nicky received a Grammy nomination) to name a few. Nicky taught at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, Florida International University and Miami-Dade College. He has given master classes and lectures in the United States, Africa, Brazil, Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Panama; organized and presented three Jazz Bass Conferences in Miami; and has appeared in various journals and sites such as Bass Player, BDGuide, Músico Pro and Forbassplayersonly.com. Nicky contributed a chapter on the electric bass for the book, Jazz Pedagogy: The Jazz Educator’s Handbook and Resource Guide. He is also a Founder of the Miami Jazz Cooperative.
