Improv March Madness: Dual Duel Competition (Opening Rounds)
Mar 14 @ 7:00 pm
Alchemy Comedy Theater at Coffee Underground

Every March for over 10 years, Alchemy’s stage becomes a full-on comedy battle as duos of improvisers compete for points and your laughs!

It’s a bit like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”. You’ll see familiar games like ABC (if the first line starts with an A, the next line will start with a B, then a C, and so on …), New Choice (the host will ring a bell and the player has to replace their last line with something totally new), and Sounds Like a Rap (exactly what you’d expect).

But, unlike “Whose Line?”, the points matter. It’s a head to head tournament where players are eliminated, dreams are made, as teams move towards the final round.

At the end of the month, only one team will go home as Alchemy’s March Madness Champions to win $222.22!

50th Anniversary of Prairie Home Companion
Mar 26 @ 7:30 pm
Peace Concert Hall

Almost 50 years ago — on July 6, 1974 — Garrison Keillor hosted the first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, and the perennially popular weekly radio show remained on the air until July of 2016, with its music, comedy sketches, and accounts of life in tiny Lake Wobegon (where the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and the children are all above average). Since the show ended, the author and humorist has continued to take the stage at venues nationwide — much to the delight of legions of fans.

In the coming months, Keillor takes A Prairie Home Companion’s 50th Anniversary Tour across the U.S. Joining Keillor are charming singer-actor Christine DiGiallonardo, dazzling vocalist Heather Masse, the ever-popular Royal Academy of Actors (Tim RussellSue Scott, and sound-effects wizard Fred Newman), music director/keyboardist Richard Dworsky, and others to be announced.

Born in 1942 in Anoka, Minnesota, Garrison Keillor developed a love of writing in childhood. “I started out with a No. 2 pencil and pads of paper, then acquired an Underwood manual typewriter with a faint F and a misshapen O,” he says. Five years after getting a job in public radio “doing the 6 a.m. shift Monday to Friday, because nobody else wanted to get up so early,” he wrote a piece for The New Yorker about the Grand Ole Opry and got the idea to launch A Prairie Home Companion.

These days, his in-person humor-filled shows are a treat for folks young and not-so-young. He has written dozens of books —including novels, a book of sonnets, a collection of limericks, a memoir, a political homily, and most recently, Cheerfulness. His biweekly online column can be found on Substack.

Rodney Carrington
Mar 29 @ 9:00 pm
Harrah's Cherokee Center- Asheville

Rodney Carrington on Tour

One of America’s most popular comedians and an actor and author to boot, Rodney Carrington shows just what kind of good times can happen when country meets comedy.

Since the breakthrough success of his first major-label release Hangin’ with Rodney in 1998, Carrington has been a favorite of audiences all over the world thanks to his enjoyably raucous take on the best things in life, starting with whatever’s in the bottle in front of him. With signature songs like “Just One Beer,” “Wish She Would Have Left Quicker” and “Put Your Clothes Back On,” he proves that some jokes just go better when combined with the twang and swagger of a country tune.

In addition to being one of America’s Top 10 highest-grossing comedians, Carrington headlined his own ABC sitcom with Rodney and co-starred with Toby Keith in the feature film Beer For My Horses. In 2017, his special Here Comes The Truth brought his blue-collar brand of stand-up and musical comedy to Netflix. His 2020 tour of venues across the U.S. and Canada follows the release of his latest album, Get Em Out, which hit No. 1 on the iTunes comedy chart.

Rodney Carrington Background

Rodney Carrington has been providing proudly blue-collar audiences something to laugh about ever since his earliest days as a performer at local venues and on radio shows in his native Texas in the ‘90s.

After years of touring nationally, Carrington’s breakthrough came with the 1998 release of Hangin’ With Rodney, a CD that introduced listeners to the combination of comedy and country music that fast became his trademark. In 2000, he scored his first Top 20 album on Billboard’s country chart with Morning Wood, an equally raucous collection that included such fan favorites as “A Dozen Roses” and “Older Women.”

Along with earning platinum sales as a recording artist, Carrington’s achievements include starring in the ABC sitcom Rodney (2004-2006) and co-writing and co-starring with superstar Toby Keith in the feature film Beer For My Horses (2008). In 2007, he made the jump to the publishing world with his first book, Coming Clean. His Netflix special Here Comes the Truth debuted in 2017. Get Em Out, his eighth comedy album, was released in 2019.
