Imagine having to choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table. Approximately 18% of individuals and 28% of children in Spartanburg County live in poverty. What’s more, many are struggling with hunger and homelessness, which become root causes for other significant challenges. Our poverty simulation is an expereince that offers a glimpse into the realities of many of our client families. Join us for a brief encounter with what many families in our community live through on a daily basis.

On November 5, Speaking Down Barriers turns 5 years old, and we would love for you to come and celebrate with us! Woohoo!
What better way to celebrate the work of brave dialogue & art than with an art show, poetry showcase, a wonderful panel, and amazing food & dialogue?! Visual artists and poets bring your art for the “Pop-Up”! No table fees. Just share your art and you keep your sales. :)
Since November 2013, Speaking Down Barriers has provided a space for the community to have dialogue around achievement gaps, educational and wealth gaps, health equity, white privilege, oppression, intersectionality, differences of religion, and so much more. Our very first dialogue was called “Spartanburg: Opportunity for All?” and we naively entered into dialogue around classism in our very own community. Who knew what “Poetry and Conversation” would become?!
Most importantly, this work has led us and others to wrestle with who we are in the midst of many pieces, asking questions like:
“What is your power for transformative change?”
“Are you liberated within yourself?”
Join us in November for “Love Expansion”! Bring a dish to share, a friend, and your family. Let’s celebrate healing & life!

You know magic when you see it, touch it, or hear it. Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Rector uncovers that feeling with anthems equally rooted in whimsical nostalgia and excitement for the future.
In 2013, The Walking In Between marked his first Top 20 debut on the Billboard Top 200. His ceaseless touring and prolific output paid off in a big way on his 2015 breakout album, Brand New. Not only did it bow at #9 on the Billboard Top 200, but it yielded a massive hit in the form of the title track, “Brand New.” Clocking 41 million-plus streams on Spotify, the single organically landed over 40 film and television placements, including a trailer for The Edge of Seventeen, a TV spot for Disney’s Moana, and MLB World Series and Olympics primetime spots.
His seventh full-length album, Magic, will be released June 22.
