Bullington Gardens is known for our expansive collection of dahlias. Each year our volunteer dahlia crew work tirelessly to ensure we have the best crop possible. These amazing plants take quite a bit of work to be successful, and it starts with dividing your tuber. Join Kim Biggerstaff and Isaac Wyatt as we walk through the culture of dahlias. We will also have a tuber dividing demo after the class. Participants will get a chance to divide a clump of tubers and take one home!

Yet what does it mean for those that live there? Join us as we follow polar bears, walruses, seals and penguins as they find their icy Edens in peril. Brought to you by the speakers, adventurers and explorers that have joined the tradition of the polar explorer and returned to tell us why this frozen frontier is vital for our planet.

Bob Ray (b. 1952) works in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and even correspondence and performance. Born in Warrensburg, Missouri, just east of Kansas City, he now lives with his wife in the small town of Washington in eastern North Carolina.

Guest-curated by Mark Sloan, Bob Ray: Suit Yourself features a selection of the artist’s most recent paintings and drawings. Inspired by the Abstract Expressionist painters, Ray also draws from the Dada and Fluxus movements. Each of Ray’s artworks offers evidence of its own evolution. Erasures, false starts, notes, scribbles, overpainting, and tentative asides are visible on the layered surfaces. The artist incorporates household substances into his work, including housepaint, tar, masking tape, coffee, butter, tea, and collaged fragments of previous works.

Ray was the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship in 2015, and he has had recent shows at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina; Lump Gallery in Raleigh, North Carolina; and the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston in South Carolina.

The GCMA has published an exhibition catalog of Ray’s works that includes a commissioned collaboration with California poet Allison Benis White, which will be available for purchase.

Over the past three decades, composer/guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio has forged a multi-faceted career, winning acclaim in rock, classical and theatrical circles. From founding innovative rock band Phish and composing Tony-nominated Broadway musicals to genre-bending collaborations and celebrated solo work, the Texas-born musician has left an indelible mark on music and culture.

Serving as lead guitarist and vocalist for Phish, the band completed an unprecedented 13-night residency at world-renowned Madison Square Garden, bringing their total number of performances at the famed arena to 64. In his work with Phish and as a solo artist, he has collaborated with a wide array of artists, including Dave Matthews, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, B.B. King, and as part of the trio Oysterhead. The project types are as diverse as the artists themselves. Anastasio co-wrote the music for the Broadway musical Hands on a Hardbody, which received a Tony nomination for “Best Original Score” in 2013, just a few years before joining the surviving four members of the Grateful Dead for five stadium shows in celebration of the band’s 50 anniversary. Somewhere in between, he found time to perform original compositions and debut new orchestral works alongside symphonies in some of the most famous performance halls.

If you’re seeking a look inside Anastasio’s creative genius mind, simply turn to Between Me and My Mind, a film documenting his creative process, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival and played a sold-out limited run engagement in theaters across the country. All this while continuing to release solo works, like his 14th solo album, Ghosts of the Forests, which Rolling Stone said was “built around psychedelic guitar liftoffs, ambitious arrangements and extremely personal lyrics.”

Piedmont Natural Gas Downtown Alive presented by Spectrum benefiting Metropolitan Arts Council, kicks off the weekend every Thursday night with music at NOMA Square on Main Street. FREE ADMISSION. More than 45,000 people attend this event annually. The event serves as the single largest fundraiser for the Metropolitan Arts Council. Hey look! It’s Jon Reep. You know, that guy, from that thing. You might remember Jon from Dodge Ram Truck’s popular ad campaign as the “That thing got a HEMI?” guy or the comedian who won the world wide show “Last Comic Standing” with the most votes ever cast on NBC or as “Raymus, the pot smoking farmer” in Harold and Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay. Either way Jon Reep is a legendary powerhouse comedian! A national touring comedian whose contemporary country clean point of view has won over legions of fans in theaters, comedy clubs, and on tv and in film. As a stand-up he’s built a following through his hilarious comedy specials on Comedy Central, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. He can be seen in Netflix’s “Brad Paisley’s Comedy Rodeo” and his standup special on Amazon Prime “Ginger Beard Man” or his new standup album “Ginger Pain”.
