First responders from agencies across Greenville County participated in another successful LEO Santa Toy Drive, collecting toys for local children in need.
Community members donated hundreds of new, unwrapped toys at Bon Secours Wellness Arena during a 28-hour collection marathon from Dec. 4 through Dec. 5. In addition to the donations collected, Target donated $5,000 in gift cards, which LEO Santa used along with other funds to purchase more toys.
“This year we’re we are distributing toys on December 20,” City of Greenville Police Detective Joey Gault said. “We get out with toys and start telling [the children] to come outside. Their eyes light up.”
Founded in 2020, LEO Santa is a volunteer association of law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel and other first responders who donate their off-duty hours to serve families in need. The regional initiative works in partnership with area schools, social workers, churches and community organizations to identify families struggling during the holidays.
In addition to distributing toys, the group provides emergency assistance throughout the year, including fire displacement and other crises.
