More than 515 donors gave $1,067,677 to support student scholarships and engaged learning experiences during Furman’s 13th-annual partnership with Giving Tuesday on Dec. 2.

“A majority of the Giving Tuesday gifts help to fund academic and athletic scholarships, in addition to the hands-on learning experiences that Furman is known for, like internships, faculty mentored research and study away,” said Shon Herrick, interim vice president for Development.

Furman’s reliance on student tuition has been a driving force behind the focus on growing scholarships. By strengthening scholarship support, donors are making a Furman education more accessible for future generations.

“When donors make a gift on Giving Tuesday, Dins Day or other times of the year, they are joining others in embodying the Paladin spirit, which is the cornerstone of our community,” said John Pezdek, director of annual giving.

Supporters were encouraged to give to one of five featured scholarship funds on Giving Tuesday, supporting academics, student athletes, scholarships for students experiencing economic hardship, research and internships, and study away opportunities. Similar to last year, the Academic Scholarship Fund, which ensures the Furman community continues to be comprised of individuals with exceptional academic ability and drive, received the most gifts.

“We are grateful for each donor and their belief in The Furman Advantage. Their support provides access for students to experience all that Furman has to offer, regardless of their financial circumstances,” Herrick said.
