An innovative new training center in Greenville County aims to inspire tomorrow’s workforce.
Fueled by a $382,000 donation from 3M, Greenville County Schools celebrated the opening of a fully renovated manufacturing learning lab at the Golden Strip Career Center. The space will allow students to train on technology similar to what the more than 500 employees at 3M’s Greenville advanced manufacturing plant use each day.
“We hope that this investment we are making here today helps inspire young students to look at a career and a journey in skill trades in manufacturing,” said Andrea Dubbs, plant manager at 3M’s Greenville location.
The classroom — designed to train students in mechatronics — underwent a full renovation. Updates included removal of the ceiling, installation of new lights and power reels used in modern manufacturing, and new machinery.
Dubbs believes the program will result in future 3M employees in Greenville.
“But if not, to still stay in manufacturing in Greenville County,” she said. “And contribute to the economic growth, development and success of our community.”
The renovation was made in partnership with Heart of America, a nonprofit that transforms learning spaces and provides educational resources — from classrooms and career-technical labs to libraries and community centers — in under-resourced communities.
“Our goal was to transform a space into something inspiring,” said Jeff Hardy, partnership director at Heart of America. “We want our students to see themselves as part of the workforce of the future.”
School officials, local elected leaders, as well as executives and staff from 3M’s Greenville manufacturing facility, attended the check presentation, ribbon cutting and tour of the space.
3M has operated its Greenville plant since 1974. The facility employs more than 500 people producing films and tapes.
