Honoring the past, empowering the present and building a stronger future — one home, one family, one community at a time.
With that vision in mind, leaders of Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County, Juneteenth GVL and community partners gathered for a wall-raising ceremony for a new home being built in the Nicholtown neighborhood. “It’s an awesome experience,” said LaTonya Phillips President, and CEO of Habitat Greenville of Greenville County, “to know that our community can come together in this way.”
Habitat Greenville is the first affiliate in the country to build a home in honor of Juneteenth. Juneteenth GVL Executive Director April Evans found value in knowing the project would outlive those who created it. “The families that get in this home, this is not only building generational wealth, it’s helping with sustainability. It’s helping build and raise a community that’s already historic,” Evans said.
The Juneteenth Community Build is a part of Habitat’s Bridge Building Series, an initiative that brings people from various backgrounds together to create affordable homeownership opportunities. “We wanted to show what it looks like, when you coexist as a good neighbor. Right? Whether you’re a nonprofit or for-profit business, reach across the aisle and partner up,” said Joseph Fields, the Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County Vice President of Equity.
The home will be dedicated to a family within the next four months.
