City leaders celebrated renovations to Cleveland Park courts with a strong serve from District 3 City Councilor Ken Gibson, an avid tennis player, and streamers from participants.
“I want to make sure that as young people are coming through, they have the same opportunities that I have,” Gibson said. “Access to recreation provides opportunities to make relationships, to become better people and develop more effective citizens.”
The $1.67 million project, funded through the Neighborhood Infrastructure Bond includes 13,000 square feet of additional court space. There are six tennis courts, two pickleball courts and a new basketball court.
“Anytime the City of Greenville can enhance park and recreation amenities, it further enhances quality of life. Recreational activities, being outdoors, being active has long been part of the fabric of Greenville,” said District 4 City Councilor Wil Brasington.
As part of the project, all courts received LED lighting and the parking lot was resurfaced to add more spaces. “Cleveland Park has always kind of been the hub of tennis, for the City of Greenville,” said Recreation Administrator Brad Cuttino. “You can come out in the evenings, you can come out on the weekends… the courts are packed.”
Crews also constructed a multi-use path to connect the courts to the Swamp Rabbit Trail, ballfields and the Greenville Zoo parking lot.
