The City of Greenville’s planning and development department will move to Main Street and welcome the public to learn about upcoming projects.
By unanimous vote, City Council authorized the city manager to enter into a lease agreement at 15 S. Main Street, to create a design center on the first floor of the former Wachovia building. The design center will house offices for the city’s urban planners who help manage growth and allow for public drop-ins.
“We’ll continue to provide the same sort of public services that the planning department has always provided,” City Principal Landscape Architect Edward Kinney said. “We’ll just be able to do it in a much more open and creative space.”
The center will be a one-stop-shop for developers and homeowners with questions.
“We have a lot of folks who ask us about, residential additions, somebody who wants to add on to their home,” said City Senior Urban Designer Barrett Armstrong.
In the evenings, the facility will host project preview meetings, allowing the community a sneak peek at new developments before applications are submitted to the City for approval.
“This really gets to the heart of what makes downtown Greenville so special,” Mayor Knox White said. “It’s our attention to good planning. It’s our attention to urban design. The public can come here. Anybody can come here and learn about the future downtown.”
The new space is slated to open later this year.
