Honoring his “inspirational leadership” in the community, Mayor Knox White received the Urban League of the Upstate Whitney M. Young, Jr. Humanitarian of the Year Award.
The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Humanitarian Award pays respect to the late Executive Director of the National Urban League, who served from 1961 to 1971. The Urban League of the Upstate’s mission is to advance equity by empowering the Black community and underserved individuals throughout the region.
“What makes this year’s recipient most deserving is what makes Knox White a great Mayor and a great leader,” City Council Member John DeWorken said at the February 23 event. “Everyone who has worked with Knox White knows that he has unwavering perseverance and a laser focus on issues that will positively impact all of our citizens.”
A native of Greenville, Mayor White has served on City Council since 1983 and as mayor since 1995. His tenure has been defined by neighborhood revitalization, economic development and transformational projects for downtown.
“My dream for the Greenville Community is to be recognized preeminently as a city of opportunity for everyone,” said Mayor White. “That Greenville is a place where partnerships and collaboration come naturally whether in business and development or in personal relations. That Greenville doesn’t hide its issues and shortcomings in history but addresses its shortcomings confidently – confidently shaping its own destiny as a city others strive to emulate.”
